I wanted to share and interesting experience I had along this journey of training for a marathon, and why I am so glad I choose to follow this path:
A few weeks back I was feeling frustrated with all the running I had been doing and not losing weight/fat. Lets face it (though shamefully), that is always on the back of my mind and I figured it would be a guarantee with all this excise. Apparently food is a major aspect of weight loss, and so I decided to make a major change in what I had been eating against the advice of the trainers.
In endurance sports, a high carbohydrate meal plan is needed to fuel your body with energy. When running a full marathon you are running/jogging/walking for about 4-6 hours straight and can burn a few thousand calories in that amount of time. Instead of burning prepared energy I thought I would burn stored fat and have quick results in weightloss. So 2/3 of the way through my training I moved to a protein and vegetable diet. Two weeks later we had our 16 mile run (farther than I had ever gone before.) I am usually warmed up after 3 or 4 miles and can hit a good stride so I wasn’t surprised in the beginning when I felt so weak and stiff. Unfortunately I never recovered from that feeling. I dragged myself 3 1/2 hours over 16 extremely long miles in pain. I kept eating sport gels that “should” give a boost of energy, but I could never recover the lost energy I should have already had on aboard.
Due to low attendance that morning 3 of the coaches were there with me, and 2 of them ended up walking most of the route and were still ahead of me. Though ashamed, I learned these powerful lessons.
First: like this route, I could endure to the very end, though painful. . .this was empowering.
Second: these coaches want me to have the best experience possible, and return the following year. By personal experience, they laid out a plan to help me do this with the greatest amount of success I could achieve. I took their plan and “through it out the window” by setting their advice aside and continuing on a plan I set for myself though I had never trained for an event like this before.
Third: Like the parable of the 10 Virgins, I was on the path. I had been “storing oil,” progressing quickly, and reaping “physical” strength due to my effort and obedience. Then I chose on my own accord to leave the defined path. I started to see some changes I wanted to see such as inches lost around my waist. But when the time came that I needed the stored “oil” or energy, I did not have it and no matter how hard I tried to pour “oil into my lamp” or energy into my body I could not make up for what was never stored.
These lessons came as a “somewhat” gently rebuke from the Lord that day. He wants us to have the best experience possible, and he wants us to return back home. Through personal experience he has set forth a path for us that will help us achieve these goals. When we are obedient, we reap those blessings. If we leave the path for a time we can return, though we will surely experience some needless extra pain due to our choices. The only way to have spiritual or physical growth is to gain it for ourselves step by step. It will not be there when we need it if we do not do the required work to earn it.
This is a mistake I do not want to make twice.

To many suffering from cancer, their dream becomes. . .life. We can help many attain that dream by helping to find a cure.
Did you know that so far this fiscal year (since July) our chapter has already distributed more than $103,000 in direct financial aid to patients in our Chapter? LLS provides our patients with valuable services including support groups, education materials and financial aid, and none of that would be possible without the money that you are raising! So thank you and keep up the good work!
