Update on Weeks 5, 6 , 7 & 8
Sep 22, 2010 by Angelica Simmons

So I have been a little remiss in posting lately, so here is an update on the past few weeks of training.

Week 5 - August 28th - We ran a 10K (or 6.2 miles) through Irvine. We met at a different park and took a new route for this run. It was overcast and cool which always makes for better run. I pretty much ran straight through this run, only stopping for crosswalks and the water stop. I felt great after the run too. I can tell that I am getting more conditioned and I am increasing my pace.

Here is a picture after our 6 mile run!

Week 6 - September 4th - We had this Saturday off from group training due to Labor Day weekend. However, we were encouraged to get in a 60 minute run on our own. I failed to get this run in, and instead just enjoyed relaxing for the weekend. I did get in some extra sleep which prepared me for the training to come.

Week 7 - September 11th - We met back at our normal location this week to head out for 7 miles. We did take a new route that tested us because the first four-plus miles were on a steady incline. It definitely was intended to help us prepare for the hills in San Francisco. And I felt it later in the day. While I felt good right after the run, I was ready for a nice long nap a few hours later.

Here we are after finishing 7 miles!

On September 14th, a few of the other women and I had a fundraiser at Johnny Rockets. We had a good time publicizing the event, unfortunately not many people showed up. But we are all determined to raise money for LLS, so we will keep working on new ideas.

On Friday, September 17th, I went to support my friend Briteny who, with the help of our mentor Jacque, put together an ice skating fundraiser. The night was a great success and so much fun. I haven't been ice skating in years, but it came back to me pretty quickly.

Week 8 - September 18th - After a late night ice skating, I headed out to Huntington Beach to meet the Team for an 8 mile run at the beach. It was overcast with a little drizzle - perfect for a long run. We ran down to the pier and then headed North along the beach. At four miles we turned around and headed back to the start. The team training for the full marathon was doing their 20 mile training at the beach too, so we passed a lot of other TNT participants running out there. I was definitely tired and struggled a bit on this run, but I finished it at a great pace of about 11:30 per mile.

Next weekend we head into double digits for a 10 mile run. Beside keeping up with my midweek training runs, this week I need to get the momentum back into my fundraising. I seem to have stalled at bringing in donations, and I don't have much longer to reach my goal.

Thank you to everyone who has already supported my training by making a donation. you can still help me by passing along this site to others so they can help fight cancer too! If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, please don't delay any longer. Click the DONATE NOW button to the right and make your tax-deductible donation now. Every little bit helps me toward my goal.

Week 4 - A Hot 5-Miles
Aug 22, 2010 by Angelica Simmons

Saturday, August 21st was our fourth week of group training. The marine layer that has been around most of the summer had disappeared and the sun was out at 7:30 a.m. when we met at our training location in Irvine. It was still cool, but I knew the sun was going to make this run different than previous weeks. We had the last of our clinics this week which was on hydration and nutrition. It is just as important to remember to think about hydration and nutrition the day before a run as during the run. I will have to start planning my Friday meals appropriately as our Saturday training runs continue to get longer.

We headed out for our run at about 8:00 a.m. Our course was different this week. We headed out in the same direction, but after heading up the hill that crosses over the train tracks, we headed down to the path that runs parrallel to the tracks. There was no shade, so the sun beating down made it a hot run. Luckily I remembered to bring my water bottles with me this week. We incorporated fartleks - short speed sprints - into the run this week. They are meant to help increase your overall speed. They certainly tire your legs and make running at my regular pace a little easier. I ran this week at 6-1 intervals, and it felt pretty good. I finished the 5-miles in just about an hour which was a great pace for me.

Although it was hot, I was motivated to finish because I knew I could and I knew I was doing it for a great cause. I am still working to meet my fundraising goal and would appreciate your support. Just click the Donate Now button to the right to make a tax-deductible donation to support my goal.

Week 3 Training - 60 Minute Run
Aug 17, 2010 by Angelica Simmons

Saturday, August 14th was our third week of group training runs. We met at our regular training site in Irvine, had a clinic on core strength and exercises to improve it, and then went out for a timed run. When we have a timed run, we all head out together and run for 30 minutes at our regular pace, then we turn around and run the 30 minutes back to the start. There is no set mileage for the week, so everyone ends up running different mileage depending on their pace and everyone is able to focus more on their form and breathing. I ran just under 5-miles on Saturday in my hour out there. The nice thing about the timed run though, is that everyone finishes at pretty much the same time so we get to cheer each other on. It is really great for the team.

Fundraising is continuing. In the little over a month that I have been fundraising, I have raised over $2000 toward my goal. Thank you all! I still have a way to go to reach my goal though and I will keep striving for it. You can continue to help support me by spreading the word about my goal - email this page to your family and friends.

Don't forget to visit my blog - Run.Knit.Repeat... - for more about my training and other aspects of my life. It is usually updated a little more often then this page and will include additional information and links.

I hope to have some pictures to share next week so you can see me in training mode.

The TEAM part of Team in Training has a special meaning and I plan to discuss its significance in a post on my blog soon. However, TEAM also stands for Together Everyone Accomplishes More. I have the physical team with whom I train each week. But all of you out there who support me in any way are also part of my Team. It is because of you that my running actually accomplishes so much more by helping LLS achieve their mission. Thank you all for being part of my TEAM! It really means so much to me.

See you next week. Go Team!

Week 2 - Four Miles
Aug 11, 2010 by Angelica Simmons

Saturday, August 7, 2010, was our second group training run. We met at our regular training site in Irvine. Our coaches put us through a clinic on running form and stretching exercises. After the clinics, it was time to put in 4 miles on the pavement. We ran two miles through a residential area of Irvine, by a lake, and even saw some ducks, then truned around and headed back to the park. I ran with my mentor and another teammate. We ran 4-1 intervals -- we ran for 4 minutes, walked for 1 minute -- and finished the run in about 49 minutes. It was a good run, but I was definitely ready for a nap later in the afternoon. Next week we do 5 miles, so I have to make sure to keep up my short runs during the week.

I am approximately a third of the way to reaching my fundraising goal. I still need your help to raise $5,000 to help find a cure for blood cancers and support the incredible mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I appreciate any help you can provide. Every penny helps me get closer to my goal!

First Group Run
Aug 10, 2010 by Angelica Simmons

Saturday, July 31, 2010 was our first group training run. We met our coaches and mentors at a local running store, where we had a clinic on proper running shoes before heading out for a 2 mile run. It was a quick and easy run and a great way to get started with the process. I met some nice people and look forward to getting to know them throughout this process.

I didn't get a chance to get properly fitted for running shoes after our run because I had to get home to finish moving, but I am planning to get back to the store soon for a fitting. I want to make sure I have the right shoes to get me through this process without any injuries.

I still have a way to go until I reach my fundraising goal. Thank you to everyone who has already donated in support of my goal. Their names are listed along the right side of this page. I appreciate your support! Please spread the word about what I am doing so that others can support my goal as well.

Saturday, July 24, 2010 was the Kickoff Party for the Winter training season with TNT. I got to meet my running coach and my mentor. Unfortunately, our honored teammate was unable to attend because he is currently preparing for a stem cell treatment, but I will get to meet him soon. The kickoff was great! It was really inspiring to see everyone else who has signed up to be part of this great program. I was also amazing to hear from the honored teammate for the triathalon team, who is currently in remission and will be training alongside them.

I am looking forward to starting our group runs next Saturday. We will also be having a shoe clinic so I can make sure I am wearing the proper shoes. And I will get to meet everyone else on the team, including those who weren't able to attend the kickoff.

I'm looking forward to a great season of training!

Thanks for all your support!
