My Why
Jul 15, 2016

Kenedi and Kendal are beautiful twin girls who share many things - the same parents, sister, features, and sadly, the same diagnosis...Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  They were just 3 months old when they received this devastating diagnosis.  (Pictured above are the twins on their first day of chemo.)

Kenedi and Kendal have proved to be superheroes!   They spent 127 days living in the hospital where they received 80 doses of chemo, had 19 dressing changes, 106 lab draws, 27 different procedures (echos, EKGs, X-rays, CT, etc), 16 blood product transfusions, 4 biopsies which included sedations (all times 2!), a new PICC line placement for Kenedi and an endless amount of antibiotics and other medications each!  After those hell-ish 5.5 months, Kenedi and Kendal were declared in remission and off treatment.  (Pictured above is their last day in the hospital.)

Since off treatment Kenedi and Kendal have grown into strong, rambunctious, beautiful little girls.   They have overcome huge obstacles such as re-learning to eat by mouth and playing catch up in their fine and gross motor skills.  Today they are happy, healthy 14 month olds who crawl around everywhere!  (Pictured above is their first birthday photo shoot.)

I often feel like I was in a bad dream for those 5.5 months of treatment.  But the truth is it was all very real.  AML is a tough form of leukemia.  The treatment is intense and the side effects from treatment can be life long.  The twins will be monitored for long-lasting effects, such as heart failure or possible secondary cancers, for the rest of their lives.  Not only are the effects something to worry about, but each day we worry about the possibility of relapse.  To be "cured" from AML they must be in remission for 5 years. We are fast approaching the one year mark and even though each day comes with a little stress and anxiety about the "what if" we continue to find the joy and count every day closer to our 5 year remission date as a blessing.

After I became a "momcologist" and began living out a parents' worst nightmare, I developed a passion for being active in the childhood cancer community in any way possible.  My girls have inspired me to do whatever I can in search of better treatments and ultimately a cure.  I am a firm believer that:

awareness = funding = research = cure

And a cure is what we need.  This is why I'm so excited to announce that this November I will be running in my first Team in Training (TNT) half marathon event.  I am working hard raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of my girls. A donation from you will help fund research for treatments that will save lives every day. Research that can help my girls and all those fighting blood cancers. Please help me in support of my efforts with TNT and help get us all closer to a world without blood cancers.

Someday is today.

    "I have been following kenedi and Kendall's page since it was started. I have been so moved by their journey but it also opened my eyes to childhood cancer. There needs to be more research not only for treatments but for causes. Kudos to momma Abbey she is an inspiration. Thanks to Abbey childhood cancer awareness is being raised. "
