This is hard, but worth it.
Aug 14, 2012 by Theresa Melendez

I can’t believe that it’s already over halfway through marathon training and even crazier—the summer is winding down! It seems like just yesterday that I started off my training in May, but as many of us already know, time flies by constantly.

I was not sure what to expect when I signed up for Chicago and TNT. I just knew that I was filled with hope and the motivation to combine two things so important to me: running and the fight to find a cure for Leukemia. One word that I feel sums up the experience so far? Humbling.

There have already been many times where I had to second guess myself about why I ever thought it was a good idea to train for my first marathon in the heat and humidity of the summer. I ran my farthest distance to date last weekend—16 miles. I was incredibly nervous about it. I won’t lie to you, it was probably one of the toughest runs I’ve ever had. At certain points when I felt like I wanted to quit, I began to think about my fellow teammates who had battled cancer and were also out there training. I thought about the touching and emotional stories that I’ve had shared with me through TNT about the children who are going through treatments but were still happy and optimistic. I thought about Kevin’s battle with leukemia and how much he inspires me to be the strongest person that I could be. I finished that run with pride and tears in my eyes because I know that no matter how difficult this is, it’s truly all worth it in the end. I’m running with a clear sense of purpose.

There’s a Jason Mraz lyric that I find myself thinking about all the time throughout training: “I had to learn what I’ve got, and what I’m not, and who I am...” I’m learning that I’m stronger than I ever thought possible…that I’m NOT a quitter…and that each run allows me to have a better sense of clarity of who I truly am.

I have had so many of you donate already and reach out to me to offer encouraging words…I want to tell you from the bottom of my heart that I’m incredibly touched and thankful. I am proud to fundraise and run this marathon for such a wonderful cause. Rest assured, all of this fundraising is going to make a difference. We are helping to fund the search for a cure, it’s an amazing thing.

For anyone who has yet to donate, it’s not too late! You have until September 14th to submit your donations. Every single dollar counts, believe me.

Thank you again, I can’t wait to hit that starting line in Chicago come October 7th!

If there is one thing that I can say I am absolutely sure of, it’s a fact that life is one crazy journey.

For people who know me well and those of you who don’t, well, suffice to say, I’m a determined fighter.

I used to be someone who did not care much about her health. Who had no interest in exercise or eating a proper diet, I used to be morbidly obese at almost 400 pounds at the age of 22.

I finally decided that I was TIRED of being so overweight and did something about it. 2 years later, after a LOT of exercise, determination, and dieting, I was down 200 pounds but still unhappy.

I needed something to be passionate about. I fell in love with running and now years later; have signed up to participate in the 2012 Chicago Marathon.

Throughout my crazy journey, I was lucky enough to find someone just as determined and so incredibly inspirational to share my journey with.

His journey had been crazy in a unique way. My boyfriend, Kevin Schaible, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at the age of 15. Shortly thereafter, remission was achieved; the next two and a half years of chemotherapy and radiation kept him there. He just surpassed 18 years cancer free! You can read more about his story here!

I knew when signing up for this marathon that I wanted to do something special, as it is my first. I have dedicated each of my races to people I care about and I wanted to dedicate this one to Kevin. I decided to join The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team in Training. This is a cause that is close to both Kevin and I. Like other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. This is a special opportunity to help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well. Because of advances in medicine, Kevin was able to beat his cancer. Let’s help advance the research for cures!

Together we can make a difference; your donation can help me reach my goal of $3,400. Any and all donations are welcome! Donations are tax deductible (tax ID # 13-5644916). Don’t forget, some companies will match employee donations dollar-for-dollar, so double check with yours as well! Please also spread the word to family and friends that you think might be interested in donating...the word of mouth can be very powerful :)
