Racing to Save Lives

Hi Everyone!

In May, I am going to hike the Grand Canyon as member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. You may have heard of Team In Training....did you know you can hike to support cancer research? That's my style! All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.

While I don't have a close connection to blood cancer. Every person affected by blood cancer is a parent, a child, a friend, a sibling, or spouse to someone! I am capable o f helping these people and their families while they aren't able to. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

I would appreciate a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.

Come back to see pictures from our practice hikes. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!

We went back to Enchanted Rock today. Twice to the summit and around the large loop trail. We saw lots of rock climbers and an amazing number of wildflowers. We did about 10.2 miles. On Sunday, part of our team went to Lost Maples. I wanted to go but wasn't able to. Our event is close enough now that it seems real and we are getting excited!

I wasn't able to hike with the team yesterday so I had to get creative. I parked at Brackenridge Park & walked all the way downtown via the Riverwalk and then back for a total of 10.5 miles (one benefit of going the Riverwalk is the availability of Ben & Jerrry's!). It was good to train when it was hot and sunny....closer to what the canyon will be like. We depart in 20's for real now!

We were scheduled to go to Lost Maples today but Hwy 187 was closed so we had to come up with another plan. We went to Medina Natural Area and did 13.2 miles (our own little 1/2 marathon!) We started out in the rain but once on our way, it got better. We never saw the sun and the last 3.5 miles were in the pouring rain! We looked a bit like drowned rats at the end.

8.4 miles at Gov't Canyon. Muddy! Muddy! Muddy!

Hill Country State Natural Area. This is a great state park near Bandera. If you haven't been, I recommend it. We hiked all day and only saw one other family and then two couples as we were finishing up! We did a total of 11.5 miles or so. It was our first really warm day so we mostly battled heat instead of miles!

This week we went back to Gov't Canyon and did about 10.7 miles. We hiked on Sun. this week due to the planned (but cancelled) garage sale. It was a great trip. Hard to believe that it froze there the night before and there was still frost on the ground when we started out. My knee is bothering me a bit but I've had ice on it. This Wed. is recommittment. I have to pick the trail I am going to do at the canyon & after that there is no turning back....whatever I don't raise, I will have to pay for myself!

Our weekday practices are being held at Crownridge Natural Area. Our distance is far but we did multiple, killer hill repeats. You always think of San Antonio being pretty flat but you go just slightly northwest of town and you can find some sizable hills. The view was fantastic could see all the way to the Tower of Americas downtown!

March 13, 2010

Had our Saturday hike at Enchanted Rock. We did about 11.6 miles and went to the summit twice. It was great to see so many people out enjoying the sunshine and spring break.

The team went to Hill Country Natural Area for practice. I didn't attend but instead worked at the Alamo Heights Band Run. We had a booth to answer questions about Team in Training. This also served as a fundraiser for my trip!
