My Reasons for Running...

On September 9th, my best friend called to tell me her six year old daughter, Chandra, had just been diagnosed with leukemia. I don't think anything can prepare you for finding out a loved one has cancer, especially someone so lively and young. Obviously I wanted to help... but I didn't know how. I immediately turned to the internet, to find people who'd been through it before.. one person pointed out in reference to the treatment "This is a marathon, not a sprint." So it seems very fitting that I will be doing a marathon in order to raise money to find a cure.

Looking around, I realized it is because of charities like The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) that the survival rate for Chandra and children like her is so high. I was extremely grateful that people had participated in the past to get it where it is today, and wanted to participate, not just for Chandra, but for everyone who has been diagnosed with a blood cancer. The treatment and survival is better than what it once was, but it's not good enough. So I joined Team in Training. I'll be running the Napa Marathon on March 7th, 2010.

I'm running in honor of a very strong and brave little girl who calls me "Auntie Sharon"...

I'm running because her mother wants to participate but, understandably, is a little too busy right now (though I AM holding her to her promise to participate with me in a few years!)...

I'm running for all the people out there, the true heros of our team, who are battling blood cancer...

I'm running to cross the ultimate finish line... a cure!

Please help me!

Be sure to check back frequently for updates on Chandra and to see my progress. Thanks for your support!

Ran 8 miles today. It was a little more difficult than it should have been since I'm recovering from a cold, but all in all it went well. I'm over that and the stress of Thanksgiving and a cat that went missing (he's back home safe and sound.. happy as can be now!) so I should have more time to concentrate on the running and fundraising.

Chandra is doing well. She was in the hospital for a week because she caught a cold, poor girl! But she's brave and strong. The chemo was making her sick after every treatment for a while, but that seems to have gotten better. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers! Thanks!

Ran 12 miles today. I'm getting to the point were running feels good again. The last mile didn't feel so good... but up until then it was going good!

Chandra is still doing well. She is getting two shots a week into her legs (one in each leg). Deep into the muscle. Its pretty painful, but she's handling it well. She's doing really well keeping up with her school work too. She can't go to school, but she has a teacher come by occasionally. She's testing better than all the other kids at her age group at the school her teacher works at. But that's 'cause she's so awesome! I continue to be amazed by her!!
