I FINISHED MY FIRST OF TWO RACES

On 2 October I finished the Half Marathon in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 2:32:22.

The total on this page hasn't caught up yet, since the checks have to be mailed to Atlanta, but I was able to raise over $780 with that run.

Now comes the big challenge. I have a target of $1000 more by the time I run the ING Miami Marathon on January 29, 2012.

LLS funds lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and treatments for other types of cancer, such as chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. New targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal tissue are providing drugs and procedures that are improving quality of life.

For more than 60 years, LLS has been solely focused on people with blood cancers. Presently, we have more than $250 million committed to research across eleven countries. Every dollar is provided by concerned donors. LLS invests in the best, outcome based science:

  • Anywhere, with no geographic or institutional boundaries
  • Without profit incentive
  • And LLS funded advances are helping patients beyond those for whom they were originally developed, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. In the past decade, nearly 50% (19 out of 39) of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA were approved as treatments for blood cancer patients. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those for whom they were first developed. With your help, we are saving lives.

Will you help me?

I am asking everybody to donate $25 to LLS as part of my marathon fundraising effort. Just about anybody can do $25. You can do $25. Even if you can’t, please give $10 to beat cancer. Make it $5 if you have to. If nothing else send me an email of good wishes, or even some prayers. Be part of the cure.

Please contact me if you have any questions at rlloydevans@yahoo.com guayaquilwriter@gmail.com or 593-4-238-2391.

Please make a donation to support my participation in the Maratón de Guayaquil and ING Miami Marathon and help save lives. Be sure to check my Web site frequently to see my progress, and thanks for your support!

I'm Going to be BALDACIOUS!

Most of you know I am running two races to raise money and awareness about cancer and cancer research. Now I'm kicking it up to a new level. I'm picking up the Baldacious Challenge!

So far we have raised $350 and I am so proud of what we have done, but I know we can and must do more. Here we go!

I'm challenging all of my friends, contacts, family and students to give to my campaign. I challenge everybody to give $10. Just $10. Between now and September 26 if I raise $500 dollars I'll let my students shave off my hair and beard.

I'll run hairless - bald - egg*centric - and no doubt pretty geeky when I run the Guayaquil, Ecuador Half Marathon as part of the Maraton de Guayaquil. It will be all in a very good cause. Give $10 TODAY!

TOGETHER...WE RUN FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT

TOGETHER… WE RUN TO BEAT CANCER

Please make your $10 donation today!

Hello, I am Richard Evans, a US citizen living, teaching, writing and running to beat cancer out of Guayaquil, Ecuador and Miami, Florida.

I have joined Team in Training (TNT), the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) fundraising program. I will be running the ING Miami Marathon on January 29, 2012 to raise funds for cancer research, and to raise awareness about cancer. Actually, I am running TWO marathons because I am running in the Maratón de Guayaquil in Guayaquil, Ecuador on 2 October 2011, also to raise money for cancer research.

Why am I running to raise money for cancer? I'd like you to meet someone - Jose:

Jose is a typical 9-year-old kid who lives in Playas about an hour's drive from Guayaquil. He likes to play football (that's soccer to us Norteamericanos). School and church are important to him and his family.

He has leukemia.

And unfortunately he and his family know an awful truth. Leukemia kills more children and young adults under the age of 20 than any other disease, accident, hunger or malnutrition. In fact, every 10 minutes, another person under 20 is diagnosed with Leukemia.

Every 10 minutes.

That's why I am running, to do something to help the thousands of Jose's in Ecuador and the United States.

A portion of all monies donated go towards cancer research, even a donation of $10 makes a difference. But there is a massive need in this world and you can reach out and help victims of cancer in a variety of ways:

  • • A donation of $25 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
  • • A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
  • • A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
  • • A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.
