I'm at it again - I just signed up to do the Goofy Challenge in January, 2018 as part of the 25th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. That's 2-days of running (half marathon then a marathon the next day) for a total of 39.3 miles! Wait, what? I don't even run do I?

The last time I solicited donations for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was way back in 2013/2014 when I did the Dopey Challenge at Disney World with Team in Training. That just about did me in and I said I would never run again. Moral of the story - NEVER SAY NEVER!

Have you heard of the Disney World Marathon? Started 21 years ago, the event is a multi-day celebration taking place every January in Orlando, Florida. The event attracts so many participants that back in 2006 the half marathon and marathon were scheduled for separate days to accommodate more runners.

That got some crazy people thinking they could do both events thus the Goofy Challenge was born. If you run the half marathon on Saturday and the marathon on Sunday, for a total of 39.3 miles, that’s called the Goofy Challenge and you receive 3 finishers medals for your efforts.

Then in 2013 some nut job said, "Hey kids, let's add a 5K and 10K race to the family!" Well, that wasn't the nutty part. You guessed it, some insane running person thought, "What if you do all 4 races? Hey, how about we call that the Dopey Challenge!?!"

So, I was one of the nut jobs that signed up for the inaugural Dopey Challenge that took place January, 2014. Anyone silly enough to sign up for Dopey runs a total of 48.6 miles over 4 days. So, I survived the training and race(s) but I was exhausted for months afterwards and pretty much swore I would never do another event EVER again.

So, the Goofy Challenge should be a walk in the park right - RIGHT!?!

Goofy Challenge Details

What do you get to celebrate such a momentous occasion? Goofy runners get a grand total of 3 finishers medals and 3 event t-shirts. Bling-a-bling-bling! Participants get a medal and shirt for finishing the half marathon and marathon along with medals and shirts in honor of their completing the Goofy challenge. I'll have ALL the gear!!!!!!

The Disney half marathon and marathon each attract around 20,000 participants every year. Something like 26,000 runners signed up for the full 26.2 miles and the Dopey Challenge usually sells up within days.  In fact, the only way you can get in to really popular races (unless you're an Olympic calliber athlete or won the Boston Maraton or something) is by running through a charity organization like Team in Training to help raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Lynn has completed 9 events with Team in Training since 2006 and is currently training for her 10th event - the Goofy Challenge.
