Honoring Mike Joiner & Linda Joiner White
Apr 11, 2015

The 2015 OSWIM (Oregon, S. Washington, Idaho, Montana) Spring TnT Teams

The (fun) battle continues...

In 2002, my dad--Michael Joiner, Sr.--was diagnosed with leukemia and died less than two months later. During the sumer of 2003, I finished the Solvang Century Ride and raised over twice my fundraising goals in his honor. My mom--Linda Joiner--flew out and surprised me on race weekend.

In 2004, I did the Wildflower Olympic Distance Triathlon to continue my fight against the cancer that took my father and, again, well exceeded my fundraising goals.

And now, ten years later, I'm at it again!

I will be finishing the Victoria BC Half-Iron in June of 2015 and I hope that you can support me and the fight against blood cancer with whatever donation you can afford. Every little bit helps.

I'm doing the half-Iron as a life goal (not a bad accomplishment during my 40th year on this planet), as a way to get involved again in endurance sports, as a way to support the fight against cancer, and, on that note, as a way to honor my mother--Linda Joiner White--who died last year of ovarian cancer.

When I cross the finish line next summer (this time with both my parent's names written on my calves), I will be, on the one hand, an "Alloy Man" (half iron). I will also, for the first time, be without a parent to congratulate me and that reality is bittersweet. I will miss their hugs but I will also be paying homage to two wonderful people who did their best to raise a good son.

My fundraising mimimum is $3600 and here's the challenge I give to all of us:

Can I double that amount?!?

Imagine that! Cancer needs to know we mean business and that we're stronger and more tenacious than it will ever be. I won't stop fighting for as cancer rears its ugly head!

*************

You also have the opportunity to make your donation in honor of a loved one.

When you donate, there is a box you can click that says “Dedicate my donation in honor or memory of someone”. Then, in the “Your Message” box, give us the person’s name and a 20-character (or so) message (birth/death dates, “Love you mom”, “Miss you sis”, “Keep fightin’ bro!” etc.)

I will make ribbons to pin to my run jersey so I can carry the memory of my parents and your loved ones across the finish line June 14th!!! I'll post pictures to prove it.

*************

Please help spread the word and know that any amount helps.

Thank you for helping to support a great cause by supporting me through my training. Regular updates to follow.

Ride on and remember...
