WELCOME TO MY TEAM IN TRAINING (TNT) HOME PAGE and home of the Tour De Ohio, part 2!

As many of you will recall, last August, I pedaled perimeter of the State of Ohio, covering 950 miles - together we raised $15,350.  Yeah, I was short about 100 miles as two days we had really bad weather and riding was dangerous. Lightening and bicycles are just a bad mix! This year, I'll be pedaling diagonally across Ohio from Kent to Cincinnati and back, stopping in Columbus.  The dates for the Tour De Ohio, Part 2 will be Friday August 7 through Monday August 10, 2015.  A shorter ride, but increased mileage.  Days 1 & 4 will be 135 miles; Days 2 & 3 will be 125 miles.  This year's goal is $10,000.

It takes more than one person to make up a team and that’s why I’m asking you to donate to my TNT fundraising page for TNT!  By participating as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) TNT, I am raising funds to help find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients.  Your donation will help fund treatments that save lives every day; like immnuotherapies that use a person’s own immune system to kill cancer. You may not know it, but every single donation helps save a life with breakthrough therapies such as these.  Patients need these cures and they need your support.

Like last year, I will be adding names of people to ride In Memory Of and In Honor Of to the back of my jersey.  I will also be seeking corporate sponsorship and add their logos to my jersey - and again, we will make sure that all children we are riding for will receive a Tour De Ohio Part 2 jersey.  And has been my tradition, I will be thanking those of you making donations on this page and on the Tour De Ohio Facebook page.

Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help get us all closer to a world without blood cancers.

Thank you!

February 18.  Thank you Dave Lewsader for starting this off this year!  And adding to Dave, are fellow MHSer's Luara Harasyn, Debbie Hanerty and Steve Province (Class of '76) and Gina Cascone (Class of '86).  Thank you all for your support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Tour De Ohio!

February 20.  Thank you Tim Douglas and Dolores Kern for keeping the Class of '76 ball rolling.   Yes, this is the coldest winter I can recall since maybe the Blizzard of '78.  HOWEVER, it dos make for very warm cycling in my basement! This year I will be riding In Honor of Ellen Walker, and In Memory Of my friend Marty Felkl, who passed away this month after a battle with cancer.  I'm not a scientist, I'm not a doctor, so I do what I can do - and that is to ride and pray. Thank you those who have supported me in the past and those who support me now and those who will in the future.

February 22.  Thank you Class of '76er Debbie Misseri! I will be honored to ride for your sister-in-law Angela.

February 25.  Thank you TJ & Shawn Moore, Terry Watson and Rochelle Stein, for your very generous donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  We are now at 12% of our fundrasing goal.  Im back on the bike in the basement.  Had a great one hour ride watching a video of a group of folks riding one of the Tour De France routes in France.  Beautiful scenery!

March 1.  Thank you fellow BGSU'er Jeff Gadd for your donation!

March 12.  Thank you to fellow TNT'er and cancer kicking cyclist buddy of mine Lee Christman for his generous donation today.   I've put in 280+ miles riding in my basement .. finally able to get out and ride the roads.  A quick 15 yesterday...

March 22.  I've been out for a couple of rides - chilly, but man, does it feel good to be riding outside!  I am adding more names to the back of this year's Tour De Ohio jersey.   I will be riding In Memory Of Aurelie Wynne and Ed Demshar.  I will be riding In Honor Of my friend Steve Mazzola, my wife's colleague Tony Pellegrene, Teresa Shipp, Michael Tivossi, and Brian Kelly.  We've been fortunate that the donations are continuing to role in... Thank you to my fellow Class of 76ers' Nikki Neimczura and Debbie Stockdale, ol' BGSU roommate Larry & Martha Budd, my neighbor Brian DeHoff and Beth Darmstadter.  Thank you all!

April 6.  A great day for a 21 mile ride in the CVNP with TNTers Lisa Frederick and Lee Heid. I put in about 135 miles in March - a bit less than I rode last year.  This has just been a rough winter for outdoor riding. I'l be stepping up the fundraising activity over the next few weeks.  We are 18% of the way to our goal of $10,000.  Please help me make that goal - to help find a cure for blood cancers.  Thank YOU!

May 8.  YIKES!  it has been a month since I last posted.  We are 24% of the way towards our goal.  I rode 199 miles last month - not  as much as I would have liked.  May is the month where the mileage will kick up with weekend rides of 50, 60, 70 and 75 miles.

May 17.  Been putting in about 80 miles a week.  It seems like I am adding more names to the list of those I am riding In Honor Of and In Memory Of... I am up to 37 names on my jersey for this year's ride.  Some of the names are from last year; most of them are new. As my friend Rick Stark said, The battle continues."

May 27.  Okay, I've finally had more time to add miles - I'm just over 200 miles this month, and should hit 300.  We are up to 40 names on the jersey.  Last year there were 48.  We've recieved donations from Mark Smoley, June Broeg, Karin White, Tom & Jo Toth, Rob & Diane Pauley, Nancy Eisenstadt, Dave Foote, Joey Gentile, Matt Gutbrod, Lee Heid, Charlie Weiner, Adrienne Zonneville, Lisa Frederick, Scott & Vickie Fox, Sue, Billhardt & Lee Christman.  So many progresses have made in cancer research -- these donations bring us that much closer.  Thank you for your kindness and your concern and love for others.!

June 22.  Okay...I've been really bad about updating this.  I guess it's because I tend to use Facebook instead.  I have so many people to thank: Al Hemmelgarn, Bruce Lahman, Dr. Bob Shimmel, Tim G, Tammy Raybuck-Gavin, Bob & Cindy Bjerstedt, Thom & Lisa Mandel, Alyson Jobling, Dave Silvestro, Frank & Bonnie Kraska, Janis Miller, Angela Brown, Debbie Meadows, Jim Drexler, Paul Coffland, Curt Crawshaw, Terry Lutz, Richard Franklin, Mike Bruder, David Brooks, Karen Vainner and Nanacy Whalen!  Whew!  That's a bunch of names!  I am most grateful for your donations, your kindness and committment to helping the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society find a cure for blood cancers!

As far as training goes, I think I'm hitting my stride. June marks a ramp-up on weekend riding, starting with 60 miles on the 7th, followed by 70, and 80 miles rides the following weekends. The last two weekend long rides (70 and 80 miles), finished in the rain, and that's okay. I don't mind.  When I think of those for whom I am riding, cycling in the rain is a pretty minor inconvenience compared to undergoing chemo and/or radiation.  Their trials inspire me to ride more, a little faster, and to be constant in fundraising. We have to beat cancer.

I put in just over 300 miles in May and am well over 400 so far in June.  I think I'll hit between 600 and 700 miles this month.  July should see about 800 -1,000 miles. I am noting names of those I am riding In Honor Of and In Memory Of on the Facebook page: Charley & Jerry's Tour De Ohio (just keeping the same page as last year).  I also log and comment on training rides on that page too.

July 6.  I got in 498 miles in June and got in my first century of July on Saturday. I feel better and better every day I ride.  You folks ... I can feel your energy when I ride.  A big thank you to Julie Sheehy, Sue Ewald, Janine Jones, Tony Allen, Dr. Dave Uhall, Laura Adams and Michelle Miller for your donations!  We are over $6,000!  60% of our goal.   I just heard today that a little guy I am riding for is having his last treatments today, but that the doctors have found more lesions.  My heart broke.  Please keep little Jacob in your thoughts and prayers.  And may your dollar, your donation, be the one that makes the cure so that no more little boys and girls have to die from cancer.  Thanks and God Bless!

July 28.  In spite of the rain, I've been able to get in 3 more this weekend and then rest for a week.  I'm in awe of the level of donations being made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society since my last post!  We are just over $8,000 being raised for leukemia and lymphoma research and patient services! You are all very awesome!   Thank you Ken Zitko, Ken & Adele Mason, Deb Meadows, Mary Banks, Kris Sloane, Shelley & James Coffelt, Sue Ewald, Deb Kendig, Pam & Paul Pochitila, Jerry Ostrowski, Helen Malhotra, Debbie Wildow, Tracy Brooks, Bill Kuenzli, Vince Tenaglia, Dave Frazier, Drew & Tami Burke, Nancy Dunham, Newton Gill, Ryan Slate, Bob & Jenny Vojack, Sally Sexton, Tony Allen, Jeff & Michelle Miller, Marcia Goodhue, Amanda Rothermal, Nancy Eisenstadt.  I am just amazed!!

And even more amazing was the "kickoff picnic" that Steve & Cheryl Province, Lew & Linda Buckles, Dolores Kern and Sue Ewald through for me this past Saturday.  It was a wonderful time.  Music was played, food was piled high - and the park was full of wonderful, caring, sweet friends!!  I am full of gratitude!

Rich Linder and I are 10 days away from the Tour De Ohio start date of August 7.  Rich has been training like a mad man - it's been tough keeping up with his schedule.  Kortney Hamm from the Cleveland L&LS office has been working hard to get our Tour De Ohio jerseys made.  Ten (10) jerseys will be provided to people I am riding for this year. I will be riding In Memory Of 16 people who have passed from thier battle with cancer and In Honor Of 24 others who are in remission or presently in the fight of their lives.

September 7, 2015.  Well, it's a month after the 2015 edition of the Tour De Ohio commenced. As most of you know, I wiped out on a set of railroad tracks just west of Galloway - eight miles away from the day's ending point.  I won't get into the details save for saying I got a bit of road rash and a concussion.  All told, Rich and I rode 367 miles in three days. That is the most I have ever put in on a bicycle!  Rich and I are scheduled to complete Day 4 on October 3rd.  We will be leaving the intersection of I-71 and Rts36/37 and finishing at my house in Kent, retracing our Day 1 route.

The good news is that over $10,500 has been raised for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!  There was a flurry of donations the last few days prior to the ride.  I am very grateful for the donations and the collective committment to find a cure for blood cancers and to fund patient/family support services. Now I need to figure out what to do next year....

UNTIL then, thank you all & God speed - may we meet somewhere up the road!
