Walking Tom's Fund Raising Page

Jun 10, 2015 by Thomas Farnam

Met my short-term goal of earning a Triple Crown from Team in Training! (Only took 10 years and about 5000 miles of racewalking, 1000 or so miles cycling and a couple of hundred hiking miles.)

That award is earned by those who have completed a TNT event in three of the four categories: Marathon, Cycle, Triathalon, and Hike. My 20th TNT event was a Hike in the Great Smoky Mountains on 31 May 2015, which earned me a Triple Crown and a patch.

Unfortunately the job of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is not finished. The LLS Mission is: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. That means we have to continue raising money to find the cures and help those affected.

This is my 11th year with TNT, and my next event will be the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon on 4 October 2015. We start at Mt. Vernon, go North on the George Washington Parkway into Alexandria, then back to the bridge, across the Potomac and finish at National Harbor. My first time on this race, it was too close in time to Nike San Francisco in prior years. It will be my 21st event with Team In Training since 2005, of course TNT likes this kind of recidivism.

Guess what? Now it’s YOUR TURN to help me with this process. Make a contribution to LLS by either clicking the “Donate Now” button and using your credit card or sending a check payable to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to me at 703 Hawkins Way, Alexandria, VA 22314.

Thanks for your support.

Thanks for my birthday gifts.

What an impressive series of wonderful gifts to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of my birthday. Total of $665 donated to help fight blood cancers. If you meant to send a contribution, it is not too late. Use the link below to make an online donation, or send me a check at 703 Hawkins Way, Alexandria, VA 22314 and I'll deposit it with LLS and get you a tax receipt.

Today is a cold day in NoVA but nothing compapred to the storm facing our friends in New England, who will be in our thoughts and prayers today.

We did 4ish miles at Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge with our TNT Hike Team this morning and while it was chilly (20 or so) we seem to have used the best part of the weekend for outdoor activities. Tonight's forecast is 10 degrees with enough wind to make it feel like -10!

It is truly my pleasure and privilege to be raising money for LLS.

Happy Valentine's Dayheart

New Challenge - 35/70 DONE

New Challenge

It's time for a new challenge, sort of back to my roots. Signed up for the Smoky Mountain Hike in May of 2015. STILL RAISING MONEY FOR LLS just at a different gait on a different surface. Having been a Boy Scout who hiked many miles and an adult Scouter who did several hundred miles, this is nothing new. Of course, my body is a bit older, and this will be strictly "day hike" activity instead of wilderness backpacking but the foot motion is the same.

More details soon, just wanted to get this posted to save the space.

70 in 3 days!

Birthday Gift for my 70th?

Today I celebrate my 70th birthday! That privilege was denied to my sister Fran as well as our father Dean, who both died of cancer, Fran four days before 66, Dad at age 45. Their cancer was pancreatic, the same that took my uncle Frank W. Campbell (Mom’s only brother) and Naomi’s mother. While some progress is being made with pancreatic cancer, the blood cancers for which LLS provides research and other funding support are making huge strides, even developing drugs that are helping with pancreatic and other cancers.

We are raising money  again for LLS via TNT but this year instead of a marathon our choice is a hike! The Great Smokies at the end of May.

SO - the perfect birthday gift for me would be a contribution to my fundraising account. Once upon a time Mother gave me $1 per year, but anything will help. You can make the contribution online using this link https://pages.teamintraining.org/nca/Smoky15/tfarnam

Or if you prefer, send me a check payable to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and I’ll deposit it to my TNT account and be sure you get credit for tax deduction purposes. Mail the check to me at 703 Hawkins Way, Alexandria, VA 22314

Thanks in advance for your help.

35/70 - Almost There
Oct 01, 2014

WHAT IS 35/70?

- Mathematically it’s one way to express ½; +

- My personal goal for endurance events this year.

During the Nike Women’s ½ Marathon in DC 4/27/14 my mind wandered to the daunting prospect of my 70th birthday. After that race figured out with only three more it could be 35 by 70. Was already signed up for NWM SF on 10/19/14, so only two more for 35 also making 5 Half Marathons in 2014.

June 1 - "Run for the Dream Half Marathon" in Williamsburg, VA put #33 on the shelf! September 14th the Navy/Air Force Half in DC put #34 in the bag, so this is looking possible.

Nike Women’s ½ in San Francisco on 10/19 will be #35. NWM SF will be my 12th Nike event, did full marathons there in 2005 through 2009, plus four ½s and two NWMDC ½s. It will also be my 18th event raising money for TNT to help stamp out blood cancers.

You don't even have to leave your keyboard to contribute, just click the link on this page and make your contribution using the secure link. They'll send you an email receipt for your tax records. Or if you prefer, send a check to me at 703 Hawkins Way, Alexandria, VA 22314 and I'll make sure you get a receipt from LLS for the charitable contribution.

Please recognize my 35/70 with a contribution to LLS. $350 or $700 would be superb, or whatever amount is right for you. It IS my only 70th!
