James Mitchell a few weeks before being diagnosed with AML

On October 17, 2010 I will be running in the Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco, California! That’s 13.1 miles! Luckily, I am not doing this on my own. I have joined the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. Through this program, I have great coaches, mentors and teammates whose support will help me cross the finish line.

I am completing this event in honor of James Mitchell who recently died from AML. James was diagnosed with AML in January of 2009. His doctors gave him the choice to use chemotherapy to prolong his disease and extend his life; or undergo induction chemotherapy which would give him a chance at transplant at a much higher risk of dying. When presented these options, he chose to undergo induction chemotherapy in the hopes of being cured of the disease. James underwent 5 inductions of chemotherapy and a drug trial. Unfortunately, each time he went into remission, his cancer came back. Eventually, he lost his battle to this terrible disease leaving behind a wife and two sons this past June. His family is committed to giving back to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in gratitude for the assistance they received following James' diagnosis and treatment. I have made a commitment to raise $3200 in his honor. Your donation will assist me in fulfilling his family's wish to give back to this amazing organization.
