Racing to Save Lives
Welcome (or welcome back, if you've donated in the past!) to my Team in Training home page!
As some of you may know, I've run 3 marathons (the picture here is from my first one, at Disney World in 2003) to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I must be a glutton for punishment (or perhaps it's the fact that this is for a GREAT cause), because I've decided to run a 4th marathon - this time in San Francisco!
I was inspired to run again after a friend was diagnosed with Leukemia late last year - seeing the impacts of this horrible disease first-hand was a reminder to me that more help is still needed for research into blood cancers.
The money I'm raising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will be used to help find cures for Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Myeloma (a.k.a. "blood cancers"). This time around, I've committed to raise $3,900 for this great cause. All donations are tax deductible, and approximately 75 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to cancer research. I want to personally thank you in advance for any support you can provide, and I deeply appreciate your generosity!
Finally, if there is someone you know that's been affected by one of these diseases, be sure to let me know and I'll include their name on my race shirt the day of the marathon. They're the real heroes I'm honoring, and will be a great reminder to me of why it's important for me to run the race.
*Update 9/9/08: So far so good! My training is coming along fairly well - although I'm not going to set any land speed records, I was able to run 18 miles on Saturday! Afterwards I could hardly walk down my stairs at home, and I had ice packs on both knees and my lower back. I'm pretty well recovered now, and am looking to do 18-20 miles this weekend. Thanks again to everyone for your support - having talked to several Leukemia survivors, they've all been so thankful for the help and support that the L&L Society was able to provide during their illness - our efforts truly do make a HUGE impact on the lives of people suffering from these cancers!*
Thanks in advance for your support, both financial and moral!
Tom
P.S. If you work for a company which is generous enough to provide matching donations (*cough* GE *cough), please be sure to submit any associated paperwork - every matching dollar helps! If you do submit matching paperwork, please submit a copy to me so that I can forward it to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - thanks again!
