Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team in Training home page.

For those of you who may not know me, my name is Ryan Goede.

This October I will be running in the Chicago Marathon as a member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team in Training. All of us on Team in Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and myeloma from taking more lives. The funding does not just go strictly to finding a cure though; it does a lot more. LLS supports patients and families with many programs such as offering education, support groups, patient financial aid, Co-Pay assistance, First Connection (which links newly diagnosed patients to a peer volunteer who has experienced a similar diagnosis), and so much more.

My career as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and my interest in running have both led me to this combined challenge (the challenge of training for the marathon and also the challenge of raising $2,300). The laboratory experience has given me a greater awareness of the number of people who have to battle these blood cancers, as well as a respect for them and their families for all that they are put through.

6-13-10: Did a nine mile run in the rain. Second run in a week where it rained. No rain,

no gain I guess.

7-17-10: Did a five mile run with the group in Madison; my first run in a couple of weeks.

I've been giving my knee a rest as it's been bothering me quite a bit. Instead of running

I've been cross-training using the elliptical, as well as weight training with more focus on

legs. The coaches have been excellent and gave me great advice for easing back into

the running; Dr. David Heitmann from Integrated Sport & Spine also gave some very

good injury care and prevention tips for us all.

8-1-10: Another group run in Madison. It was a small group this weekend, but the weather was great and we got a 6 mile run in; the knee felt good too. I will be joining other runners in our group to run in the Madison Mini-Marathon on August 21. It fits into our running schedule for a good "long run" distance for us and should be a good time.

8-3-10: Went for my first 10 mile run in over a month. The knee felt good. It was a warm day though (upper 80's-low 90's).

9-11-10: Did my longest run yet: 18 miles, in Madison. Started off raining a bit, but the rain eventually stopped and it turned out to be a nice day; the run went well also. The drive home after the run seemed to take forever though. 20 mile run (the longest of the training program) planned with the group on Sept. 25 in Madison.

9-25-10: 20 miles; the final long run of training. The run went good; great running partners made the time fly by. Was a little sore the next couple of days, but the soreness went away pretty quick. The next long run will be the marathon: 10-10-10 !!!!
