Skippy's Team 2012 - Help Us Save Lives!
May 31, 2012

In 2009, our friend and neighbor, Stephen “Skippy” Lubofsky, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (“AML”), a blood cancer. In tribute to Stephen’s courage in battling his disease, Skippy’s Team was formed under the auspices of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (“LLS”) Team in Training program. 24 friends and neighbors of Stephen trained to compete in the 2010 Jarden Westchester Triathlon and to raise money to support research in finding a cure for leukemia.

Unfortunately, just a few weeks after the 2010 race, as well as the Bar Mitzvah of his son, Stephen passed away at the age of 52. In his memory, Skippy’s Team trained for and raced in the 2011 Jarden Westchester Triathlon, with even more athletes participating and raising even more money. With generous support over the last two years, Skippy’s Team has raised over $250,000 for leukemia research. Thank you! However, our mission is not complete. We need to find a cure for blood cancers – including, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.

Once again through LLS’s Team in Training program, Skippy’s Team will compete and raise money to support critical funding of research for a cure for blood cancers. The athletes listed on the right will be working hard training to complete the 2012 Jarden Westchester Triathlon. This Olympic distance triathlon combines a 1.5km open water swim, a 40km bike ride, and a 10km run (for a total of 32.1 miles). However, our efforts as athletes is nothing compared to what those battling blood cancers must endure. They face daily chemo treatments, require sterile environments before and after bone marrow transplants, they tire easily and they are physically weak. These diseases also take a tremendous toll on the families of the cancer patients.

Many of us, and many of you, know someone who has had to face this life threatening disease – sometimes successfully, and sometimes unsuccessfully. In either case, they are the true heroes, and the people to whom we are dedicating our time and our sweat and donating our money.

We need your support. Please donate – as much as you comfortably can. Your donation will go toward advancing blood cancer research and bring us one step closer to a cure for these terrible diseases. You can either give through a specific athlete listed on the right by clicking on their name, or you can give to the entire team by clicking the box – DONATE TO TEAM. If you prefer to donate by check, please make your check payable to "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society" and write "Skippy’s Team” in the memo section. You may give your check to any member of Skippy's Team for forwarding to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or you may mail your check to: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Attention: Jincy Thomas, Campaign Coordinator, 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, New York 10605. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s federal tax ID number is: 13-5644916.

LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $750 million in research—over $76 million in 2011 alone—specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
