Racing to Save
Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
Apparently once was not enough! I have decided to train for
another marathon as a member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society’s Team in Training. Once again I am inspired by my
Uncle George Bolks who is a survivor and my father in law, Don
Pickard, who currently is living with a blood cancer.
I have dusted off my running shoes and am training for The
Disneyworld Marathon in January 2009. I have pledged to raise a
minimum of $2700 for the cause. I will be running 5 days per week
for the next 5 months.
For those of you who contributed the last time, thank you again
and I hope you can find it in your hearts (and wallets) to donate
again. For those who are asking “What is the Leukemia
Lymphoma Society?” here is a brief overview:
*The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is committed
to fighting blood-related cancers and improving the quality of life
for patients and their families.
*Leukemia is a malignancy of the blood-forming
tissues: bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen. It is the #1 killing
disease of children, yet it affects ten times as many adults. Its
causes still remain unknown.
*The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society-sponsored
research has been the catalyst for effective treatments of
Hodgkin’s disease, lymphoma, breast cancer and lung
cancer.
*From 1960 to today, the five-year survival
rates for acute lymphocytic leukemia (the most common form of
childhood leukemia) have improved from 4% to 80% thanks to research
supported by organizations such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society.
Continuing the research that results in such amazing
advancements takes money. That’s where you come in! It is
really easy for you to help. You don’t have to rise before
the sun and grope in the dark for your running shorts to make it to
the Saturday group long run on time. You don’t have to tie
your running shoes 5 times a week. Those are the things I get to
do! All you have to do is: donate on-line, which is super easy and
completely secure! Your generous donation is 100% tax-deductible
and enables us to support research, patient services and
educational programs. Every little bit helps bring us one step
closer to a cure!
With heartfelt thanks,
Carol
