Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

First, Thanks a ton to everyone for your support and donations...It is truly appreciated!!!

Over the last year and a half I've been running regularly around our neighborhood. Now I've decided that I'm ready to challenge myself and run a marathon. I felt it would be an excellent opportunity to do this event for a cause - that is why I've picked Team in Training.

All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of Marla Azriel's (Steph's best friend) younger brother Christopher Julio Rivera who had leukemania. Christopher was born on July 20, 1980 in Mountain View, CA. Christopher's courageous seven year struggle with Leukemia was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. He died peacefully at the age of 25 on September 14, 2005

.

Chris was no stranger to overcoming obstacles. Chris was born with Down Syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes developmental delay. Despite his handicap, Chris had a wonderful ability to communicate and connect with people. He was a terrific asset at any party because he would fearlessly walk up to strangers and strike up a conversation. This was exactly how I first met him. Steph, my wife, brought me to a party where I met Chris. I'm pretty shy and quiet within a room with people I'm not familiar with. Chris sat down and struck up a conversation with me, and we talked for a very long time. I'll never forget how comfortable and welcome he made me feel.

I am asking that you support my effort in Team in Training by making a donation and helping advance LLS's mission.

I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!

I will be running the full Seattle Rock n Roll Marathon on June 27, 2009.

Training update:

14.Feb: Training is going along well. This last week has been anything but normal but I was able to get 2 days of skiing in and 2 runs (not counting the one I will do later today). Steph is out of town this weekend, so I need to get a babysitter to watch the boys while I run.

11.Mar: Two weeks ago I had a chest cold which slowed me a down a bit but the last few runs have been strong. We are now entering the strength phase and the Saturday runs are getting longer (90 minutes or greater). This is new terrritory for me.

22.Mar: Training continues to go well. I felt good during the 9.5 to 10 mile run yesterday (98 minutes). Now we are in the strength phase so we are starting more serious hill work outs.

17.Apr: Training has been fun. I'm definitely noticing the difference in my performance - I'm feeling stronger.

15.June: The marathon is right around the corner. I've done runs up to 18.38 miles. Now we are tapering off to give our bodies time to heal and recover before race day. I'm excited and nervous!

29.June: I completed the marathon. Thanks to everyone for supporting LLS and my training.
