Hopefully more to come!
Thank you everyone for your donations!
Your donations really do make a difference. Here are some highlights from the past twenty years of LLS sponsored research for myeloma treatments:
Therapeutic Advances
The introduction of autologous (patient’s own) stem cell transplants, and the use of targeted drugs such as Revlimid® and Velcade®, have improved median survival from less than three years to between five and ten years.
Promising Therapies on the Horizon
Researchers are developing a new immunotherapy that can rebuild a patient’s immune system quickly after stem cell transplantation, teaching the patient’s own immune cells to prevent life-threatening infections and to attack tumor cells. The therapy is being tested for myeloma patients but is likely to also be applicable to patients with other types of cancer.
Welcome to my Team In Training home page!
In December of 2006, my Dad, Brad Garton, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation's website has the following description of multiple myeloma:
"Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer. The five-year relative survival rate for multiple myeloma is approximately 38 percent, one of the lowest of all cancers. In 2010, approximately 20,000 adults in the United States will be diagnosed with multiple myeloma and approximately 11,000 are predicted to die from the disease in 2011."
Fortunately, my Dad's still very much alive thanks to recent breakthroughs in cancer medicine. That said, there's always the scary but real possibility that at some point, the cancer drug he's currently taking will stop effectively keeping the cancer in check.
To help support blood cancer research, I've decided to train for the Nike Women's Marathon again (this is my second year) on October 16, 2011 in San Francisco as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. Team In Training is providing all of the necessary support and training, and I really believe in the cause - finding a cure!
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.
Thanks for your support!
