Racing to Save Lives

Ten years ago one of my dearest friends, Chris Takino, was diagnosed with ALL, Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. Chris went into the emergency room thinking that he was going to be treated for a sinus infection and was immediately admitted into a room in the oncology ward. The next day he started his first chemo treatment. He wasn't able to watch as the doctor administered a ruby red liquid, daunarubicin, into a catheter in his chest. I realized that he was watching me and I knew that I needed to stare it down for him. I kept a calm expression and forced myself not to flinch or have a negative expression; I saw it as a savior and not a poison. That was the beginning of many treatments.


Chris's fight with leukemia lasted about a year and a half. He was in remission for about 2 or 3 months before he relapsed. The doctors were struggling to find a suitable donor for a bone marrow transplant, but they were not able--he was a tough one to match. He battled his cancer like a super hero and, without words, told us that life was worth fighting for. I miss Chris every day. He was the closest thing I will ever have to a brother; he was my roommate, my co-worker, my confidant.


I am committed to the fight against all cancers and I will actively raise money for the cause until there is a real cure. I am participating in two triathlons to raise awareness and funds for this cause and I am going to do my best to raise $10,000 this year. I have already raised and donated $6000 to the organization this year. If you are not able to give, please just take a moment to think good thoughts for those patients and their families who are currently fighting the disease.
