Fight-Passion-Hope For A Cure
May 14, 2016

On May 21, 2015 my life changed forever.  I know it sounds very cliche, but it is very true. Myself and my family were all at once thrown into a life of living with cancer. Our immediate family being myself, Mike, Haley and Karys.  And then our extended family of so many.  When I say family I mean family and then those friends that are truly family.  The Butler and Marston circle of family and friends runs very DEEP and is very BIG.  This is our Family.  All of you.  This love and support from our Family poured through on May 21st, 2015 when our dear, sweet, funny Haley was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Luekemia.  ALL.  What is ALL?  It is a cancer that starts from the early version of white blood cells called lymphocytes in the bone marrow (the soft inner parts of the bones, where new blood cells are made).  Luekemia cells usually invade the blood fairly quickly.  They can then spread to other parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).  The term "acute" means the luekemia can progress quickly, and if not treated, would probaly be fatal within a few months.  When we were told Haley had ALL, did I know all of this.  NO!  Absolutely not.  I had no idea.

Before she was diagnosed, Haley did not have her same energy level and was also very pale.  She had gotten sick a month earlier and quite honestly, I thought she had never fully recovered from that.  On Thursday May 21st, 2015 we took her into her Pediatric doctor to have her checked out.  They took a throat swap and a blood test...a finger poke.  They took a second finger poke because her blood counts were low and it didn't seem right.  The counts were still low and they then examined her belly and felt an enlarged spleen.  What does all of this mean?  I still did not know.  We were rushed to the ER at Marybridge and after several hours were told the Oncologist Pediatric Doctor was coming in to consult.  Oncologist?  Again, quite honestly, I did not know at the time that an "Oncologist Doctor" meant a "Cancer Doctor".  It wasn't until Mike and I were walked into a room at the Marybridge ER and were told point blank, "Your daughter Haley has Luekemia."  Our journey began.

So, here we are almost a year later and Haley is still fighting.  We are all fighting.  Haley is in remission and will be in treatment for another two years.  She will be considered "Cured" after 5 years.  As a mother, to watch your child go through this, there is really no way to explain it.  You feel helpless and guilty.  I want to do something to make a difference.  This is how I am making difference.  I am running a 1/2 marathon in Las Vegas on November 13th and raising money for the Luekemia and Lymphoma Society so one day we can all live in this world that is free from Childhood Cancer.  Please help in this fight to cure Childhood Cancer and donate to this cause.

With much love,

Kressent Marston
