It's hard to believe 7 years has past since I decided to do my 1st Team in Training Event. I remember it went like this:  I was on the fence whether I should sign up or not. Did I really want to fundraise thousands of dollars (could I raise that much in time?). Then there was the training that would push me out of my comfort zone (I'm no swimmer), It would also require accountability and put a wrench in my family life with swim practices, running groups and cycling Saturdays. Fast forward a few weeks and my book club friend tells me she's been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma - the decision was done.  She would endure tests, chemo, fatigue and all the additional side effects which go along with treatment. I could do this. In 2010, I finished my first ever Olympic Distance Triathlon (.90 swim, 26 mile bike and 6.2 mile run) in her honor.  I was euphoric when I crossed the finish line. I had her name sharpied on the back of my leg, "Stacy." I didn't place in any age group but I did finish and together we raised over $10,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I was the Top Fundraiser that year in my group. Unfortunately for her friends and more importantly her family, she lost her fight. On Monday February 21, 2011, she died at home surrounded by those who loved her most.

In 2017 I will once again raise lots of money and train for Lavaman and I will proudly participate in her Memory. 

I had a few other names written on my leg the day of the race:  Tami Steiger, in her honor; she passed December 2010.  Tara was written there too - in her honor as she survived childhood Leukemia.

Lastly, Mom was proudly displayed on my other leg. She is my hero, my fighter, the one that keeps on keeping on with life. A stage 4 Breast Cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. Today she is 79 years old. I can't wait to once again write her name on my leg and carry her with me along the course.
