When I did my first event, a young boy, Joseph, was my inspiration as I spent two years watching his courage, as he fought AML eventually losing the battle. If Joseph had lived, he would be celebrating his 21st birthday February 25, 2012. Knowing the importance of this anniversary for me, I have decided to challenge myself to raise $21,000. Each $1,000 representing the years, I have been so honored to have Joseph both in life and in spirit pulling me across the finish lines and raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.

During my training and journey this year, I will also be running in honor of two former students, Mary Elizabeth(Meb) and Austen who are once again battling a return of their cancers. Also, I will run in honor of my niece who completed her treatments this past summer.

Each event has become a unique journey for me. No season has been the same as I met new heroes. Their demonstrations of courage, spirit and fight inspire me to challenge myself on all levels: emotional, physical, spiritual and fundraising.

Throughout their journey some have lost the battle, while others continue to enjoy the wonders of new days because of current treatments that are now available to them. None of these treatments would be available if it weren't for the unselfish support I, and others, have received from so many. Every step I take in training will have added meaning for me as I reflect on those who are in treatment, survivors and those who have joined the choir of "angels". Thoughts of them instills in me a desire, a need, a goal, that fills my whole being, to do whatever I can in the search for new treatments and a cure for all cancer.

So this year, I say HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY Joseph, and thanks for being my guiding light. When I cross the finish line this year, I will have a small glass of wine in Joseph’s honor.

So once again I am asking for your assistance to make this tribute to Joseph’s 21st a reality.
