Cynthia's Fundraising Page

Feb 10, 2013 by Cynthia Vissers

My running store, well not MY store, I don't own it, but the one I frequent, VA Runner, hosts fun runs. And I love going to them. I do my best to arrange my schedule to be at each one because not only do I usually run with my BRF Jody, but I get to meet lots of new people as well.

They had their first fun run of the year yesterday (with a huge crowd, maybe 45 people!) and I was thrilled to be there. I got my 5 miles done (not fast or pretty but done - this cold I am on the tail end of + cold wind made it rough!) and they gave me an opportunity to share about my TNT fundraising. I was a little nervous about speaking in front of so many people but took a deep breath and gave my little spiel. I ended by saying something along the lines of needing everyone's support because the funds to help LLS aren't there without them. Then Nate, one of the managers, stepped in and said we are in this together.

I nearly cried. I have VA Runner's backing on this and they are in the ring with me. I love VA Runner for so many reasons (customer service is the best in town...seriously) and this just adds to the pile! Hearing Nate say that, and then seeing it in action with my jar at the register and employees bringing it to customer's attention, has given me the confidence to get through this.

Like going through cancer, having the support of someone (or a group) you care about can be the boost you need to get through another day. And each time I see a new donation notification pop up, I get excited. Because I know that one more Survivor is going to be getting the support he or she needs through their treatment. Whether it is a chemotherapy that was discovered because of LLS funded research, education about their diagnosis, financial support, or moral support, it will be there because of your donation.

Hit the 1k!

Woot woot! I'm over $1000! Thank you so much for everyone who has contributed so far. Every dollar we raise (because I can't do this without your generosity!) is another dollar that is able to help a leukemia or lymphoma Survivor get through the treatment they need. My Grandpa received about $4500 of assistance from LLS. And now another Survivor will be able to afford their treatment as well.

I know they are very thankful for that.

Hooray for reaching 24% of my goal! Thank you very much to my genrous donors to helping me get this far. Hoping I can get to at least 50% ($1700) by February 15th. Maybe you know someone that would be willing to donate to LLS?

I ran 5 miles on the treadmill on Saturday, and it was hard. The milage felt right but the whole standing in the same spot is torture for me! Ian ran beside me for a bit, then I listened to my favorite podcast (Another Mother Runner!), and some upbeat tunes to bring me home. I really dislike that I'm-still-moving feeling I have after being on a treadmill for that long though. Hope fully the weather will cooperate and I'll get more outside runs in the next few weeks.

Did you know I also have a personal blog? I use it to blog about my family, running, cancer, and whatever else pops into my head. I have turned it purple for TNT!

We are underway!

Thank you to my first set of donations! I am thrilled to be getting this process underway...and even more thrilled to have your support!

I am still in the pre-training phase of running. Since I took a couple weeks off around the holidays, I am building up my endurance again and getting back into the groove. My runs are fairly short right now, 3 miles or less, and I am aiming to get my long run each week up to 5 miles by the end of the month.

Why I Joined Team in Training
Jan 03, 2013 by Cynthia Vissers

I have run several races over the last few years but none with a higher purpose. I love running so why not put running to some good use! My reasons for joining TNT are my grandfathers.

Poppa, my maternal grandfather, was one of the kindest men I have ever known. He was always helping others and his love for his family was obvious. I will always remember the beautiful flowers that filled his yard. In November of 2001, Poppa died while battling lymphoma.

Grandpa, my paternal grandfather, loved the outdoors. He was a farmer, fisherman, and one of the most honorable men I have known. You know Grandpa liked you if he shared a can of his syrup! I will never forget the aroma of the sugarbush...boling sap mixed with a wood fire. Grandpa died in August 2012 while battling leukemia and lung cancer.

Even though these wonderful men are gone, they will carry me through the miles of training and race day!
