Racing to Save Lives

*UPDATE 3/25: Please see my most recent update

*UPDATE 3/28: Race is finished. My unofficial time was 53:58! That's 14 minutes better than last year's time and under my 55-minute goal!!

I'm training to participate in the Monument Ave 10K in Richmond, VA on March 28th as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am raising funds through this event specifically in memory of Amanda Amos, late wife of my good friend Adrian.

In April of last year, Amanda was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. When asked if I can raise money in her honor, she had the following to say:

"Go right ahead. I love being a mascot. Especially for fundraising. It's kind of like I'm one of those sad-eyed waifs on the TV ads for those "For only pennies a day, you can save the life of a child" charities.

One of my good friends is trying to put together a team for the 10K in my honor. Shoot, if nothing else good comes of this ridiculous illness, at least some money will have been raised for the right causes."

You can read more about her on her personal blog: http://alabamapink.blogspot.com/ and her contributions to the Mothers With Cancer blog: http://motherswithcancer.wordpress.com/author/alabamapink/

3/25: Amanda passed away this evening after slipping into a coma. She will be severely missed. Keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Last year, I finished the 10k in 1:08:05, a time I'm trying to beat by 8:05. My goal this year is under 1 hour. To push myself harder, I've decided to donate additional 10% of my overall funds raised if I don't meet my time-goal of less than 60 minutes! This equates to a pace of 9 minutes and 39 seconds per mile.

*** UPDATE: Since I have been doing so well with my training, I am revising it== my new goal is to finish the 10k in under 55 minutes, a full 13 minutes shorter than last year. I like to think of it as me giving back based upon all the contributions!

Thanks for your support!

2/24: 2 mi run 16:40

2/25: 3 mi run ~30:00

2/28: 6.3 mi run (just over 10k!) 59:20 * This means I can meet my goal, provided I don't get caught in traffic.

3/4: 4.57 mi run 42:10 (with hills)

3/7: 7.09 mi total run / 6.7 mi in 1:00.41!! This is a 55 minute 10k pace!

3/12: 4 mi run 35:38, still a 55-minute 10k pace.

3/14-15: skipped training Sat AM since it was cold and rainy, sorry. I promise I'll make up the training this week!

3/16: 6.25 miles 60:00. This was a very slow run, compared to my previous two long runs. Tonight's run was on Capitol Hill==they call it Capitol HILL for a reason. And I kept my promise.

3/18: 2.00 mile run 16:00. Just a quick (50 minute 10k pace) 2 mile run.

3/21: 6.92 mile run 59:23.23. Thats a 53 minute 19 second 10K pace! This was by far my most difficult run. I ran with the coaches and they pushed me hard. It sure seems to have paid off, too. I'm going to be taking it easy this upcoming week as my shins are hurting pretty badly. This is it, just one week left. The weather next Saturday might be rainy :(

Also, Thank you very much to those who have donated!!
