32 Miles to Help Find a Cure

Apr 19, 2011

4/19 UPDATE:

After an almost 6 year battle with colon cancer, Debbie passed away on April 13 surrounded by her family.

This has left a unbearable pain in my heart and makes me want to work all the harder to raise money to ultimately find a cure for cancer. I hope you will help me by making a 100% tax deductible donation to the LLS.

Welcome back to my Team in Training home page!

In 2009, I began training for my first endurance race event, the Fletcher Flyer century where I rode 100 miles on my bike while raising funds to support the LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY (LLS). Thanks to all your caring donations, I successfully raised over $2,500 for the LLS and its mission. Realizing I now had a passion for endurance sports I started training with some of my Team in Training sisters for a full season of Triathlons where I started and finished 5 over the past summer. With triathlon season over, I completed the Shamrock Half Marathon on March 20, 2011 in a personal best time. It was my third half marathon since November and second in 3 weeks.

WHY AM I DOING THIS

I now come back toTEAM IN TRAINING (TNT) with a renewed determination and focus on helping patients who are not only suffering from but fighting the endless battle against all types of cancers. I am a dedicated Team in Training athlete because I have seen firsthand the benefits LLS-funded research can have on patients. This September I will be taking on my most difficult race yet,THE NATIONS TRIATHLON in Washington, D.C. It is an Olympic distance triathlon consisting of a 1.5k swim, 40k bike and 10k run (32 miles in total) on a course which winds its way through the monuments, memorials and history of our nation’s capital. With the leadership of the TNT coaches and support of my teammates, I know I will be able to successfully finish the race and raise awareness of cancer research.

From developing the first chemotherapy drugs in the 50’s to developing “targeted” anti-cancer drug therapies in the 90’s, LLS researchers have been pioneers in the fight against cancer (and have even been honored with multiple Noble Prizes). Their tireless work has not only doubled, tripled and even quadrupled survival rates for blood cancer patients, but they have also provided life-saving drugs, treatments and therapies for other types of cancers as well, including colon cancer.

The research which is funded by your donations will not only help save lives of blood cancer patients such as our TEAM’s patient honorees, Miles and Emma, but it can also have a lifesaving impact on those living with other forms of cancer such as colon cancer like my best friend's mom Debbie.

  • Emma, a delightful young girl who was diagnosed with leukemia when she was only 10-weeks old, recently celebrated her 10-year anniversary being off treatment and in remission on Valentine's Day!

  • Miles, a second grader, was diagnosed on June 9, 2009 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). He is currently undergoing maintenance treatment for ALL and will likely need to continue his treatments for another two years.

  • Ashley and I have been best friends for many many years and like many close friendships you also develop a relationship with each other's families. And we were no different, her family was my family and my family was her family. Therefore, you can only imagine how devastated I was back in 2005 to find out Debbie, her mom, was diagnosed with colon cancer. Since the diagnosis Debbie has been in and out of treatment, fighting a hard battle with an unforgiving disease.

I know that many of you have not been personally touched by leukemia or lymphoma, but unfortunately we have all had our lives impacted by some form of cancer. Honorees such as Miles,Emma and Debbie are the true heroes of not only our TEAM but in our lives. Please help me be a part of the solution by donating in support of my participation in Team in Training and further advancing the LLS mission.
