Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

While I know my new favorite t-shirt (pictured here) is silly, what I am here to do is not silly at all. I'm training to participate in a Half Ironman (Augusta's 70.3) as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

This race is going to be grueling! The 1.2 mile swim in the Savannah River will be an obstacle course of alligators, other racers and nuclear waste. That will be followed by a Two-State, 56 mile bike ride in September, Georgia heat...only to top it all off with a Half-Marathon at the end...Boy, the medal better be big on this one!!

But this is nothing to the folks who have a grueling obstacle course of chemo and radiation treatments, suffer from reactions to the poisons placed in their bodies to fight this disease and the uncertainty that they go through each day. Each of them deserve a medal!

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help us raise money for a CURE!

I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!

9/9/09:

Wow! So much has happened in the last month! I have met my fundraising goal (and beat it by $.50) and am mailing in my last check today! THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!! I have also completed a 62+ mile bike ride and have gotten a whole lot more comfortable in my wetsuit! But I am still hoping the race will not be wetsuit legal...I have fundraised my butt off...Mosaic Cafe Happy Hour, BBQ and Bluegrass (With a HUGE Thanks to Berkley King), cycle sessions outside of Ukrops' and Pole Green Produce...and I have 2 final Amateur Bartender Nights (thanks to Mosaic again and Jeff the manager!) Tomorrow (9/10) from 7-9pm and next Wed (9/16)! Come on out and watch the non-drinker becoming the mixologist!! It will be an ugly sight. Speaking of ugly sights...I bought my first pair of tri shorts today. I was convinced this weekend that I shouldn't wear my bike shorts in the race due to the possibility of some uncomfortable chaffing...so, I broke down and bought a pair of tri shorts...they are shorter (blech) with a smaller cushion for the Lady Bits (blech) and I am not used to them (triple blech)! So, I will race in them on Sunday in my first ever Olympic Distance Triathlon...I love how they say NEVER change anything before a race...I will be racing in new shorts, wearing new shoes and new goggles with a new yummy treat to eat on the bike...oops...I never did follow advise all that well! Wish me luck!

8/06/09:

Thanks so much to everyone who has been donating! You kept me going and I made it over the recommitment hurdle!! Now I only have $1920 to go! =) I have 3 planned cycle fundraisers outside of Ukrops', a happy hour at Mosaic Cafe tonight! (Thanks, Jeff and Jessica!) Holly McFeely adnd I are alsop working on a Bluegrass & BBQ fundraiser, a Poker Tournament and a Cornhole Tournament...so not only am I training my butt off but I am really working hard at the undraising angle too!! Hopefully it will all pay off. Swimming is going well and I am getting better and better on the bike...my only concern is the pain I still feel in my ankle when I am running...its not good!!! But one keeps pushing on!

7/20/09:

I have suffered my first injury during training...ugh...but I'm not going to let it get me down!! I am doing really well with the swimming, even scoring 2 compliments in ONE workout from John McGuire while swimming at Seal Team PT...thats a good record! I have also received some fantastic help with the fundraising this passed week and people have been great. As many of you know, this week was recommitment, where I had to officially recommit to raising the funds for this race and its been a little bit scary. But I have some great fundraisers planned and I am hoping (cross your fingers) that this will all work out! I am also reading a great book right now, "My Sister's Keeper," which has been recently made into a movie. It closely details a family that has been struggling with childhood Leukemia. It is difficult to read what this family has to go through but makes me feel honored that I can actually do something to make the load of family's like this just a little lighter. Thanks for your help in this endeavor!

6/30/09:

I have made it through my first race this year...barely! On Sunday, June 28th, I competed in the "I Love the Tavern" Triathlon at Robious Landing Park on the lovely James River. The James has been very high lately and the current was moving very quickly. The swim was shortened from its usual 750m to 450m...and it took me 12 minutes longer in the water than it did last year doing the full 750m!! Boy, did that wipe me out for the rest of the race! But I still came in 6th in my division, so not too shabby...

Training has picked up substantially as well. I have been swimming some evenings at Randolph Community Pool in the city of Richmond and with the Team on Tuesday mornings. I am looking forward to an awesome 2 hour Seal Team workout with Dee on Friday and then a crazy 2 hours cycle on Saturday and then a 7 mile run on Sunday...my weekend sounds fun doesn't it? You know you're jealous...

6/09/09:

Yeah! I moved into my new house...FINALLY...and feel like I am ready to get back on track with my training! I went to swim practice this morning and have a great cycle planned for Saturday! Wow, I have been off of the wagon for a while. I also started the Sportsbackers Marathon Training team 2 weeks ago and am wondering what has made me so crazy as to plan for 2 HUGE Endurance events in one year. A normal person would take it one goal at a time...what does that say about me? Hoo-Yah!! =)

5/14/09:

Even though my training has fallen a bit by the wayside as I struggle to get my new house ready to move into...I am still trying hard to work towards my fndraising goal...b/c even though the race is REALLY important to me what is most important are the life-saving dollars I am raising. My newest venture includes collecting old or broken cellphones and handheld devices for recycling. The program is called Cells for Cells (www.cellsforcells.com) and I would really appreciate any help that you might be able to give me! You can email me at milady1066@yahoo.com to arrange for pick-up or delivery!

5/4/09:

What gorgeous weather we have been having...NOT!! Rain definitely puts a damper on the training fun, but so does home ownership! As many of you know I bought a house last month and am working really hard to get it to move-in status. Each little task opens up a slightly bigger task that needs my attention too! But I am trying really hard to do a little of everything! Swim practice in the morning...phew...its inside!

4/20/09:

I want to thank my awesome donors so far! This weekend was beautiful! What a gorgeous day to get out on the bike and ride! I rode a city street course that included riverside dr and it was a great challenge! I have really funny tan lines on my back though! I ought to figure out if I can ride my bike in my swimsuit top so all of my tan lines will be the same! Can you imagine a turquiose, black and white Lands End Tankini? With that and my purple bike, who would take me seriously? Do I care?

4/13/09:

Wow! Training/Fundraising officially started this week...I have been planning my schedule for the upcoming season and I am going to be a busy gal! But I cycled with the Birthday Girl, DEE, on Sunday. I hadn't been on my bike in months...but I REALLY have to get back into the pool! I had a massage last night and then ran at U of R in the rain today. I don't know what combination of things clicked into place today but I had a superb run despite the HILLS!!! =) I am on my way!
