We Did It!
Sep 01, 2011 by Melissa Hawkins

WOOHOO!!!

Thanks to everyone that has donated, and spread the word by sharing my fundraising page with others, we have raised over $3400 to fight blood cancer!! What's even better is that my Nike Women's Marathon TNT Gulf Coast Chapter team has raised over $104,000!!!

You are all awesome! Let's remember, though, that a goal is not a limit. We can continue to raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society until October 4th. Every dollar is another one that can help a patient and fund research. How far can we blow this goal out of the water?! Let's find out!

To celebrate, here's a little song for ya! Save me, San Francisco!

Update on my progress!
Aug 19, 2011 by Melissa Hawkins

I'm getting there!!!

Thanks to everyone that has donated so far, I am 1/4 of the way to my goal of $3200! Thank you so much for your generous donations to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Blood cancer patients around the world will benefit from the research resulting from these dollars.

This week, I made the front page of the local newspaper, the Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel! I and 2 other ladies in town are all raising money for different charities through our half marathon and marathon exploits. Here is a picture that ran with the story.

That's me in the middle!

I'm working every week to run further and faster, so that I'm fully prepared for the half marathon in San Francisco on October 16th. I need more help to get there, though!

To help raise money for blood cancer research and patient programs, I am going to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to sponsor me during my 13.1 miles!! How, you ask?! By sponsoring one of my very own body parts, YOU can immortalize yourself (or someone else!) during the Nike Women's Half Marathon! Here's how it works:

1) Choose of the available body parts from the list below

2) Make your donation, and send me a message (by e-mail, facebook, some other method) for which body part you would like to sponsor

3) On race day, I will write your name (or the name of an honoree of your choosing) on the sponsored part, for all of San Fran to see!!!

I will update the page as the sponsorships are chosen!

  • 1 Forearm - $30
  • 1 Foreleg - $30
  • 1 Sock - $15 - Katy Hicks
  • 1 Thigh - $50
  • Front of Jersey - $100
  • Back of Jersey - $100 - Denise Pleban - Oberst
  • Seat of Shorts! - $200

Remember that your donation is tax deductible!

Every dollar is one step closer to a cure!

Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page!

I am training to run my first half marathon, the Nike Women's Half Marathon, on October 16th! I'm fundraising for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society for this race, as fighting blood cancer is near and dear to my heart.

Here is my inspiration!

My husband, Nate, was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) on March 10, 2009, at the age of 28. After a month of hospitalization that included a drug-induced coma and breathing on a ventilator, and then 8 months of intensive chemotherapy, he is alive and cancer free today!

Here we are just 5 months ago

I am dedicated to reaching my fundraising goal of $3200 through this Team in Training program, so that LLS can continue to provide funding for research and patient programs. Without the Leukemia Lymphoma Society's commitment to these diseases, Nate may not have recovered.

If he can run a 5K 1 year after cancer treatment, I can run 13.1 miles. But I need your help and motivation!

Together, we can all make a difference in fighting blood cancer! Help me reach my goal by donating to this worthy cause. Your tax deductible donation could be used to help find that new miracle chemotherapy drug, fund a study that develops a new treatment regimen, or helps a needy cancer patient through one of LLS financial assistance programs.

Every blood cancer patient and caregiver THANKS you!

The Leukemia Lymphoma Society is committed to funding research to help cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and related malignancies and improve quality of life for patients diagnosed with these cancers.

When LLS was founded in 1949, a blood cancer diagnosis was almost always fatal. Thanks in part to innovative research funded by LLS, survival rates have doubled, tripled and even quadrupled for blood cancer patients.
