A Letter to A Hero
Dear _______,
I can never begin to imagine what you have gone through. My mind cant comprehend the pain you have felt. My body doesnt understand what its like to be attacked from within. The tears that have fallen from my eyes seem insignificant compared to yours. But yet, you continue to fight.
I read one time that a hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself. You may not have volunteered to battle cancer, but you gave up your body to fight it. You are no different than a soldier. You are fighting something that is bigger than you are. Because of your strength and courage, the world is closer than ever to finding a cure for this devastating disease. Not only are you fighting for your life, but also the lives of everyone around you.
Since you are fighting so hard for me, I decided to fight for you. My battle will pale in comparison to yours, but regardless, it will be the toughest thing I have ever experienced. On April 25th, 2009, I will run 26.2 miles in the Country Music Marathon. During my training for that day, I am going to be raising money to help you fight your battle. I will ask friends, family, and strangers to help with your battle by asking them to give whatever amount they can so that we can defeat cancer once and for all.
I am sure you have heard the story of David and Goliath. Goliath was a giant and David was basically a kid. David stood in the face of insurmountable odds. Using only a slingshot and some stones defeated Goliath. I want to be one of your stones in your battle. Every dollar that is given is another stone that we can use to defeat cancer.
When my body tells me that it has had enough and everything hurts, I will think of you and it will keep me going. You never quit and neither will I. You are a hero. You are my hero. Thank you for fighting.
Sincerely,
Wes Howard
