FUN-raising - that's right
May 04, 2014 by Elizabeth Scutchfield

I wanted to share a bit about what my expereince has been like fundraising as part of Team-in-Training.  I confess, I was a little intimidated by this part of the deal for a few reasons.  I am a 30-something and I suspected most of my peers had not been impacted by this disease, which would make them less inclined to financially contribute.  Additionally, I myself did not have a personal connection, so I was not sure that I would have a compelling story to generate interest in individuals supporting the cause.  But our stellar fundraising coach suggested that in my requests, I could offer to represent the loved ones of others who had been impacted by the disease.  So, I drafted my letter, and sent it out, with an open mind about what I might hear back.  One of the most impactful stories that I woud like to share is that of Scott Bennett.

About a week ago I received a facebook message from a long-time family friend, Jeanie McKee.  She shared that she had seen my recent facebook posts about our fundraising efforts and had been meaning to reach out.  She shared that her son-in-law Scott Bennett, was currently undergoing treatment for Leukemia.  The story gets better...Jeanie's husband, David McKee, was the individual who stepped in at the point that I was ready to jump into road cycling.  An experienced cyclist, and a Nashville resident, David offered to help me navigate this new quest.  He was by my side helping me pick out all the various accoutrements necessary for this support - bike, gloves, shorts, computer, helmet, shoes, etc.  So, he is in many ways responsible for helping me get to this point where I am now going to tackle 100 miles up and down the hills of Tahoe.  And now I get to represent their son-in-law as he faces his own mountain, undergoing treatment.  What an honor!

It is stories like these that have led me to realize I have stepped into something that is so much bigger than me.  Seeing people give in big and small ways has left a big impression on me...whether it is friends who came out this week to buy yogurt at Sweet Ceces, where 20% of the proceeds went to our fundraising efforts, or witnessing family & long-time friends step up to show their financial support, I am truly touched by all of our capacity for good.

This is happening!

I could not be more excited to share this journey that is ahead with each of you who visit this page!  In a little more than two months I will be whizzing (or wheezing) around the largest alpine lake in North America!  My current employer, Hospital Corporation of America, is sponsoring a team to train for a century (100 mile) bike race at Lake Tahoe, and I have the privilege of getting to raise money for cancer research in the process.  As we move forward with our training and fundraising, I will keep you posted through this portal!

Teams are made up of individuals. Without them, there is no team.

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I have a mission-to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers. To accomplish that mission, I’m participating in a sports endurance event as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training. Like the other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I’m improving the quality of my life by participating and with your support, I can help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well.

Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.

"I love that you are following the call of the "landscapes" and "wild geese" -- for yourself, God and the "family of things": Wild Geese by Mary Oliver You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -- over and over announcing your place in the family of things. LOVE YOU!, Nancy -- $54 is 27 twice :)"

"Elizabeth,I am so proud of your effort with TNT! May God watch over you during your training and encourage others to donate to such a worthy cause. You are a true example of selflessness. I know you will be thinking of all those who struggle with this disease each step of the way. -Lorelei"
