100 Miles To Go

It's Go Time!
May 30, 2013 by Jonathan Puncochar

This is it! I fly out tomorrow morning and the race is on Sunday! I've ridden hundreds and hundreds of training miles, and I'm ready for the challenge! Thanks to all of you participating with me with words of encouragement and financial donations, we are all working to help those that need it! Together, I'm confident we can make progress in the fight against blood cancer!

Three Weeks to Go!
May 13, 2013 by Jonathan Puncochar

I have to write about one of my training rides a couple of weeks ago. It was one of those days where nothing went right. I almost was not able to even get out of the driveway. I needed to add air to my tires and, through the process, I snapped off the tube stem and broke my pump. That tube became completely unusable. Then I put in a new tube and used my friends pump. Snapped that stem as well. Two tubes down. We dug through our supplies, found a used tube that had been punctured and put on a tire patch. I used a disposable air cartridge to pump up the tire and it pumped up great within 3 seconds. And then went I took the fitting off the stem, all the air whooshed out due to some freak issue with the valve. It was Sunday morning and all the bike stores were closed, it was not looking good. So we very carefully used my friends portable hand pump to inflate the tube. We finally did it and I had tires I could ride on!

This day's ride was for 65 miles on a patched tube with no backups. So we went for it! What could go wrong?! All was good until about mile 30. I ran over something in the road and the impact created a second puncture right on a seam of the tube. We tried patching it but the patch didn't hold. Fortunately, my tire went out right in front of the only country store for miles around. Unfortunately, the store didn't carry any bike tubes, not surprised! We looked through our back packs and my friend Dave found one last brand new tube buried at the bottom of his. So we very carefully inflated it and were able to get back on the road.

The rest of the ride was through beautiful country roades with a gorgeous blue sky and great weather. About 10 miles from the end, Dave had a flat. No more tubes. I did have some patches so we put one on and very carefully pumped his tire back up. It held! We were back on and wheeled back into my driveway about 45 minutes later. After all that, we made it! I'm sure there are some analogies here and lessons to speak of, but I guess the main thing is that some days are harder than others and it is good to appreciate those days where there are no flat tires.

With three weeks left to train, I will be pushing it hard to be ready for the 100 miles and many hills around Lake Tahoe. Friends have asked me if I have seen the elevation charts and serious hills that I will have to climb, and haven't yet. So I'm going to have to check those out and start planning my pacing and where I need my energy most to get over those hills. It will just be a plan and I'm sure something weird will come up to throw the plan overboard, but it's better to have one and have to change than to not have one at all!

This has been a great experience so far, and many friends, family and co-workers have joined me in fighting back against blood cancer. Several of them have lost loved ones to blood cancer, which has made this even more personal and meaningful. I'm close to my rode and close to my goal, with 100% of all donations go towards research that has been saving lives. Please join me and with your help, I'm confident that many lives will be spared through our efforts!

Tipping the Scales!
Mar 04, 2013 by Jonathan Puncochar

I just passed 50%! It was a cold day on Saturday but we went ahead with the yard sale to raise funds for LLS! It snowed all day long but people kept coming! It was great sharing what we are doing and hearing the stories of others that have been affected by cancer and knowing that their purchases were helping others. I have to admit, the weather being what is was, that my attitude was not what it needed to be. It wasn't until the end of the weekend that I remembered that I was able to complain about something that a lot of people currently suffering with cancer aren't able to do. That was sobering and a little life lesson I wasn't expecting but am very thankful for. Keeley has almost reached her goal and I'm a scratch over 50% of the way there. Your donations and words of encouragement are an inspiration, so thanks and know that together we are pushing back cancer! Here is a pic of our garage, where we ended putting most of our stuff to keep it out of the snow....

Looking forward to Spring
Mar 01, 2013 by Jonathan Puncochar

Spring is around the corner! I rode 29 miles last weekend and am so ready for some nice weather when my feet won't freeze! Here is a pic of my ride on the Natchez Trace, where I saw a Turkey and herd of deer, which was nice!

Time to Hit it!
Feb 07, 2013 by Jonathan Puncochar

Spring is just around the corner and I can't wait! I've been riding in the cold, cold weather long enough! Here is a picture of our early morning riding and triathalon team.

There are many miles to go and dollars to raise, but with your help, I'm confident that I'll get there! Thanks for being a part of my team!

Jon

"Good luck!! I did a 200 mile bike ride that was spread out over four days in 2011. 50 miles wasn't that bad at all...I'm confident with a little training 100 will go just fine for you! Learn how to change a bike tire, and bring a CO2 pump with you... :)"
