Donations Gratefully Accepted :)
Apr 30, 2017 by Doug Smith

As you may know, I've run several marathons to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Those efforts have raised $8,632! This just goes to show what amazing things happen when a lot of people pool their resources. This year, I'll be running the Chicago Marathon in October. That might seem like a long way off, but October will be here before we know it! I want to get a head start on reaching my fundraising goal of $3,000. When that happens, together we will have raised over $11,000!

LLS's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. It accomplishes this through research, giving patients access to lifesaving therapy, educating the public, and influencing public policy. TNT and LLS fundraising efforts through marathons, triathlons, cycling and hiking really are making cures happen. The easiest way to help LLS further its mission is by donating here. (If you would rather pay by check, email me at doug@meatlessmarathoner.com. I'll give you the directions.)

In addition to any donations you can make, there's one more thing you can do that won't cost you a penny. Simply forward this email to friends and family who may have been touched by blood cancer. They can donate online at my personal fundraising page: http://pages.teamintraining.org/svmb/chicago17/dsmith

On behalf of LLS, thank you for your support.

Go team!

Doug.

New Lymphoma Immunotherapy!
Apr 20, 2017 by Doug Smith

We’re excited to share the news that two new immunotherapy treatments, advanced with funding from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), have been submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval.

Harnessing a patient’s immune system to fight cancer is showing great promise. We are now seeing decades of research and LLS support coming to fruition. These new treatments, known as CAR-T (chimeric antigen receptor) immunotherapy, involve removing a patient’s immune T cells from their body and reprogramming the cells to find and kill cancer cells.

One of the CAR-T therapies is designed to treat children and young adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), while the other is for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients. Both of these therapies, which benefited from significant LLS investment, are for patients who have relapsed or are not responding to other treatments.

Because of our continued support of this groundbreaking research, we are seeing remarkable progress in the treatment of blood cancer. This news validates our long-term commitment to bring lifesaving treatments to patients faster. As we look forward to the future, we hope this approach can help treat other cancers as well.

March is Myeloma Awareness Month
Mar 16, 2017 by Doug Smith

Myeloma is a cancer of white blood cells called plasma cells that are found in the bone marrow. It is the second most commonly diagnosed type of blood cancer in America. Fewer than half of patients survive five years after diagnosis.

While many new therapies for myeloma have emerged in recent years that have extended the survival rate, it remains an incurable disease.

We’re trying to change that. Since 2009, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has invested approximately $70 million in myeloma research, focused on understanding the underlying causes of the disease in order to develop better targeted therapies and immunotherapies, as well as preventing the progression of the disease. We are committing even more funding to this critical research in the coming years, but we need your help.

March is Myeloma Awareness Month, and throughout the month LLS will be reaching out to increase support for advanced research as well as raising awareness of the urgent medical need.

In honor of the 30,000 people who will be diagnosed with myeloma this year, please donate to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society so we can help save more lives. You can make your tax deductible donation at this page and forward this link to your family and friends: http://pages.teamintraining.org/svmb/chicago17/dsmith

I'm At It Again!
Feb 27, 2017

This fall, I'll be running the Chicago Marathon. It'll be the fifth time that I've run a marathon to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). You can learn the latest about Leukemia and Lymphoma research, follow my training, and make secure donations at this page.

White blood cells help your body fight infection. Your blood cells form in your bone marrow. In leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. These cells crowd out the healthy blood cells, making it hard for blood to do its work.

I'm asking you to help by making a donation to my fundraising campaign. You will receive a confirmation of your donation by email and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation. Each donation helps accelerate finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Nearly 958,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers. I am hoping that my participation in Team In Training will help bring them hope and support. On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, thank you very much for your support. I greatly appreciate your generosity.

In good health,

Doug Smith

P.S. Whether you can donate or not, I would greatly appreciate it if you could email this page to your friends and family who have been impacted by blood cancers.
