Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to Tammy's Team In Training home page.

I can’t thank everyone enough for your support. I finished my first marathon as you probably guessed on January 11. I remember thinking at mile 9 that I was feeling real good and knew I’d make it the distance. But then somewhere around mile 15 my quads and knees were killing me. But thanks to bio-freeze, one of the TNT coaches Dan, and mind over matter, by mile 20 something came over me and I was able to block out the pain and time began to fly by.

I think this is the first time I have actually experienced that “runners high” some refer to because regardless of the pain, it seemed I was in this place of bliss and each mile seemed easier than any I had run prior. Amazing feeling actually. I think my last mile was likely my fastest mile the entire race.

After passing the finish line, all I could think of is that I should just keep running because if I stopped, I might be in too much pain to walk, so I ran almost the entire way back to the sign out area. Lol. I am so sore but am so happy.

The only disappointment is that I'm about $100 away from achieving my fundraising goal:(

There were about 1800 TNT participants and the total amount of money raised for the Leukemian and Lymphoma Society was 7 Million.

I completed this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers and in honor of Kevin LePlante, a victim of Lukemia. Kevin was diagnosed with leikumia at the age of ten, and unfortunately was not able to beat the disease. His courage and commitment to helping others during the process of treatment was simply an inspiration to many.

It is people like Kevin that are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. Also, if you are interested in a Corporate Partnership, donations of $1,000 or more include recognition for your company. Just email me at tamara@resultssource.com and I'll give you more details. Also, if you have an item that could be raffled, such as Buc's tickets or a weekend getaway, I would be thrilled to coordinate the raffle as a fundraiser.

I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!

Training Log

January: On December 31, I woke up with a 103 temperature. On the Monday following I went to the doctors still with the temperature and the worse sore throat I have ever had. I was diagnosed with Strep Throat. I'm not less than a week away, and have Strep:(

I remember telling the doctor that I was running a marathon on the 11th and asked his suggestion. He said, "I suggest you not run a marathon that day." I responded, "Maybe you didn't understand me. I said I was running a marathon this coming Sunday and need your suggestion as to how to recover quickly."

The good news is that I was feeling good enough to run 5 miles the Thursday prior to the Sunday race, and then miles the Friday prior.

December: On December 6, our proposed 20 mile run was all on concrete. By the 15th mile, my right knee gave out. I had torn a collateral ligament skiing several years back. I was unable to finish the distance. My plan is to make sure all my runs are on surfaces more gentle to the joints until the event on January 11. My longest distance this onth was 18 miles and my daily runs were 5 miles typically on the golf course near by.

November: After a 12 mile run on November 1, I was beat. Went home and took a nap to wake up to over 102 temperature. Ultimately, I was out for almost 2 weeks with pneumonia. Pneumonia is a lung illness so recoverty to 100% is long:( I began running again on the 11th but it took me until the 18th to regain my distance back to where I needed to be which was about 6 miles daily. My longest distance run in November was 18 miles on the 28th. It was horrible. The last 3 miles felt like 10. And the last 30 minutes, every minute felt like an hour.

October: October was uneventful as my daily runs were typically 5 miles and my longest didstance run was 11 miles. I was in Turkey for 10 days and was able to continue running there thanks to my love who set me up with a gym membership during my visit. During this time my runs were on a treadmill versus on the golf course on the road as I typically do. For the most part, a very successful training month.

September: On the 1st, I pulled a hamstring in my right leg severly, to the point in which walking was difficult. So I began swimming to keep my cardio going until the hamstring heals:( The most I have ever swam was freestyle for one mile associated with a physical education grade. Now after more than 20 years, I was doing it again with my first mile on 9-13. On 9-16, I began to run again. Made it 4 miles in the same amount of time that I had typically ran in prior to my injury. Yah!! The rest of the month went well with daily runs typically 4 miles and my longest distance run was 7 miles.

August: Began running/ walking about a mile to a mile and a half on August 19. I made it to 4 miles by the end of the month.
