The Little En-JENN That Could...is at it again!

Think about this for a minute: Every ten minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. This statistic represents nearly 146 people each day, or more than six people every hour. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.

I'm once again training to participate as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training! All of us on Team In Training are working hard to raise funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. They are the inspiration that keep me motivated to get out of bed in the morning and train in the hot Florida sun. I invite you to become a hero in their lives - and help us reach the ultimate finish line: finding a cure!

Please make a donation to support the

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

I ask on behalf of patients everywhere,

including our local patient heroes shown below.

EXAMPLES OF HOW THE MONEY HELPS:

  • $30: cost of a chemo drug prescription co-pay
  • $50: cost to register a bone marrow donor
  • $75: provides bone marrow typing for a family member of a patient with leukemia
  • $150: the daily salary for a research fellow (the ones who will find the cure!)
  • $200: the cost of a patient education program
  • $300: trains 25 peer volunteers to provide emotional support to newly diagnosed patients
  • $500: provides patient aid (for medical treatment and travel to medical appointments)to a person with blood-related cancer for up to 1 year

All donations help! Size truly doesn't matter; give whatever you can. The LLS keeps its costs low, allowing over 75% of every donation to go directly to research and patient care. And your donation is 100% tax-deductible.

I hope you will visit my web site often to see my progress. Thanks for your support!

GO TEAM!!

Training Progress:

Week of 5/14: Ran 9.2 miles (long run: 3 miles)

Week of 5/22: Ran 13.7 miles (long run: 4.4 miles)

Week of 5/29: Ran/Walked 11.2 miles (Long run 5 miles)

  • The heat is beginning to take a toll on me. I wasn't able to run all my mileage this week and had to substitute some run time with walking just to get the mileage done. It's only June - why is it soooooo hot already?! I thought the challenge this month was going to be the hurricane season but it looks like I'll be battling through weather issues during my entire training season!

Week of 6/5: Ran/Walked 6.1 miles (Long run: XX)

  • Well my body was not cooperating on 6/5 to complete my long run. It was disappointing but sometimes your body knows its limits and you just have to listen to what it's telling you. Time to really make rest and proper diet a true priority - otherwise the next 4 months are going to be pure torture!

Week of 6/12: Ran/Walked 10.5 miles (Long run: 4.5 miles)

  • We trained at a new long run location for this long run (Gadsden Park, across the street from Macdill AFB). It was a nice location but I only completed 3 loops of the park instead of my intended 4. I got a bit overheated and thought it better to play it safe than push too far. I'm still learning how to train in this heat and even though we're heading out at 6:30a, it's already at least 80 degrees and the humidity never seems to leave...so it's all about the baby steps for me at this stage.

Week of 6/19: Ran/Walked 8+ miles (Long run: 1 hour)

  • Because of the heat (and tiredness) in the evenings, I decided to try shifting my post-work training runs into before work runs. So starting Monday, my alarm has been going off at 4:20am (and no, that's not a typo - I really meant to type 4 there!) Steve Perry has been interrupting my sleep waaaaaay before the sun rises. I'm happy to say so far so good on the getting up piece - one more work day this week...hopefully tomorrow morning I'll be as good as I've been the last few days. I just keep reminding myself why I'm out there training and fundraising and it makes getting up a little easier.
  • Fundraisers in the works: concession stands at Raymond James stadium in the upcoming football season (Go Bucs & Bulls!); dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. Details & dates to follow!

Week of 7/11: Long run: 5 miles 54:24

  • So my race goal has shifted. I was diagnosed with skin cancer recently and will be having a surgery in a couple weeks. Since the surgery will interrupt my training (albeit briefly), I am trying to make the smart choice ahead of time and switch to completing the half marathon in San Francisco now - and will be training in the shade as much as possible and wearing 85+ SPF on all exposed skin guaranteed!
