Racing to Save Lives Welcome to my Team In Training home page. I'm training to participate in The Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers and personally for Kathy Rodgers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure! Kathy's Story- Wife, Mom, Teacher, Coach My "Patient Hero" ! Kathy has an extremely rare form of Lymphoma- its official name is: Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL)- Gamma Delta Strain There have only been about 30 cases documented of this specific strain of CTCL and 90% of the people die from the disease within 2 years. There is no known cure for this disease. Kath was diagnosed with this disease 3.5 years ago. She showed signs of this disease 9 years ago, but they were not sure what it was until exactly 3.5 years ago. So Kath is breaking all the rules as far as living with this disease. Kath has been on several types of medications including Chemotherapy, clinical trials, and radiation treatments over the last 5 years years. No matter what meds they give her, the disease does not regress nor go into remission, but the good news is that it has not yet gone to anything internal. It has spread across her lower body on the skin as lessions, and is highly concentrated on her legs . It has spread onto a few spots on her upper body over the last year, but we still reamain optimistic that they will find a miracle drug that will reverse its progress. Through her doctors at the Univerity of Penn. Kath's "case" has been represented and discussed at National CTCL seminars across the country, and doctors from Stanford and several other hospitals are keeping track of Kaths status several times a year through Dr.Ellen Kim and Dr. Sunita Nasta at Penn. Through the duration of my training I keep Kathy in mind me to remind why this cause is so extremely important. Her strength to battle this disease motivates me everyday to train harder. On race day I will be wearing a bracelet for Kathy in her honor. Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support! |
