The Race Goes On...

After a successful first marathon season last fall, I train with Team in Training (TNT) to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society once again. This year I train in honor of Greg Melendy and his battle with leukemia.


My events are:

4/20/09 The Boston Marathon

5/3/09 Avenue of the Giants Half Marathon

5/31/09 San Diego Rock N' Roll Half Marathon

An Update on Greg Melendy - 2/3/09

On January 13, 2009, Greg received his bone marrow transplant. He remains in relative isolation as he undergoes treatment at Stanford Hospital for the next several weeks until he is ready to be transferred to the Ronald McDonald House where he will likely stay until the end of April. The Ronald McDonald House is very close to the hospital (about 1/2 mile) and he'll need to go back and forth several times a week as they monitor Greg's condition. The bone marrow has officially "engrafted" which means he is producing his own white blood cells with red blood cells and platelets soon to follow!!! One perseistant infection still remains, but all in all his prognosis is good. At the end of his treatment, Greg will have gone from being of an O- blood type to an A+, and he will likely be allergic to cats. I know, It blows my mind too! Part of the process of a bone marrow transplant is that you take on certain physical characteristics of the donor - namely with regard to allergies and blood type.
