I DID IT!

I ran and finished the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco. I crossed the finish line with an official time of 4 hours 56 minutes 58 seconds (just ahead of my personal goal). Not that I was racing to win, but I was thrilled that I came in 11th in my age group. Woo hoo!

WE DID IT!

Running this marathon was a first for me, but it was an even greater achievement in the fight against blood cancers. The 2011 event alone raised over $13 million for the Leukemia & Lymphoma society. Even cooler, the Silicon Valley & Monterey Bay Chapter contributed 10% of that record milestone. Wow!

Thank you for your support, motivation, and donations!

There is still time to donate this season too. Please click on the Donate Now button to contribute to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

A Truly Life-Changing Experience

Beyond the accomplishment of completing something so difficult that it seemed inconceivable just 6 months ago, crossing the finish line was something much, much, much more powerful...

  • Experiencing first hand that running a marathon is more about your heart than your legs.
  • Digging deep and kept moving forward when my body hurt like never before and my mind was saying stop.
  • Thinking about Linda and all those we are honoring and who were with us in spirit out on the course.
  • Being cheered on, inspired and nursed back to health by my lovely wife Wendy and my totally awesome daughter Lillian.
  • Knowing that all my friends and family were rooting for me all the way.
  • Meeting and chatting with other TNT runners from around the US and Canada.
  • Rocking out to the 1st class show that Nike put on. Needed the frequent water stations and blaring Power Songs.
  • Coaching and training with an amazing set of coaches. I followed every bit of guidance and know that it made the difference.
  • And joining and being embraced by my new TNT family. Go Team!

Will I do it again? YES!

The mission is not complete.

There is not a cure for blood cancers.

We will find a cure.

So as long as I'm here, I am going to keep racing for a cure!

Sep 06, 2011

That's right! Just over a month to go before my first ever marathon at the Nike Women's Marathon in hilly San Francisco. The Peninsula Marathon Run Team is really kicking the training into high gear now. With each weekly distance run, I run the longest I've ever run before... and I feel fantastic!

This past weekend my TNT team ran 18 miles along the back part of the marathon event course in San Francisco. It is very powerful to know that I've already conquered the deceptively grueling hills of Golden Gate Park and Lake Merced that will try to punish me at mile 16 and mile 21 on race day.

Beside the San Francisco run, the TNT team has been pushing hard in our other trainings, including:

  • Weekly "hill repeats" up and down the steep grade at the Stanford Dish.
  • 16 mile run along the water at Half Moon Bay
  • 14 miles of torture that started at the dreaded Dish and winded through the hills of Portola Valley
  • and more intervals and track workouts at Palo Alto High School.

Fundraising has been going incredibly well too. Our small team is right on track for our big target with over $250k raised already this season. I am also nearing my personal fundraising goal. Your donations and support have fueled me to drive harder in my training each week.

Your donations are going directly to cancer research and are making an impact. In fact, a research project that was funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has recently made big news in what we all hope is a breakthrough in curing chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Read about it here http://www.lls.org/aboutlls/news/pressreleases/081111_genetherapy

Please note: All donations are due by September 31st. If you haven't already donated, click that big green button on the right of this page.

GO TEAM!

Jul 24, 2011

The Team in Training Peninsula Marathon team is hitting mid-season form. Yesterday, we ran an unbelievably beautiful 12 miler along the hilly coast of Pacifica. The mid-week track sessions and daily strength training certainly helped me power through the longest distance that I have ever run.

But what got me most pumped was meeting 2 honorees along the course. Two kids (just 12 and 7 years old) who are battling leukemia were at the water stops to help cheer us on. Seeing their enthusiasm reminded me why we're running so hard... to help find a cure!

Please help by making a donation today by clicking on the green button on the right. Your generosity is a huge inspiration to me. More importantly, your donation directly funds effective cancer research and compassionate patient support.

Remember to ask your employer if they match your donation. It's an incredibly easy way to double the impact of your support.

Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to Bob Angus' Team In Training home page.

I'm training to participate in the 2011 Nike Women's Marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. Please make a donation to help advance LLS's mission.

Five months and hundreds of miles of training is challenging. However, all the individuals who are battling blood cancers are the real heroes on our team. And we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

I am running this event in memory of Linda Gunn, my dear and loving friend. A huge part of who I am today and what I believe in is because of Linda, her husband Bob and the whole Gunn family. This race is to celebrate her and is the best way I know how to help find a cure to a cancer that took her away from us too soon.

Please help by making a donation today. And remember to ask your employer if they match your donation. It's an incredibly easy way to double the impact of your support.

Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. The Nike Women's Marathon is being held in San Francisco on October 16, 2011.
