Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
Just a few weeks ago on June 10th, my friends Jose and Rosa Sarabia were enjoying an ordinary evening at home with their family when their daughter Elena complained that she wasn't feeling well. She was running a fever, so like all parents do, Mom gave her some children's tylenol and laid her down for the night. As the night progressed, Elena's temperature spiked dramatically and suddenly Rosa realized that this was no ordinary fever, so she took Elena to the ER to see a doctor. Later that evening, the doctor told Rosa that she needed to take Elena to Stanford for some more tests. After a grueling night of needle pokes and countless hours of worry, every parent's worst nightmare suddenly became a reality for the Sarabias. The doctor said, "Your daughter has Leukemia and we need to start chemo as soon as possible."
I found out at church the following Sunday, and made sure to visit them in the hospital on Monday. Our Church is very much like a family. When someone is going through a trial, we do our best to pray for them and give our support. While I was visiting with Jose, I told him about another family that he'd never met. A team of runners who raise money to defeat cancer by running for those who are sick. I explained that though I have no idea what it would be like to suffer a trial like this, there is a uniting bond between a runner and his Honoree. They encourage each other by standing in the imaginary corner of the ring for their fighter. That day Elena became my very special Honoree.
Elena's body has responded well to the treatments. There are two more years to go. Please pray for her and her family as they fight this battle.
I'll be running with Elena's Ariel doll to help me those last few miles.
We'll also be taking pictures with Ariel everywhere we go, and I'll post them on my facebook page.
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.
I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
