Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
(That's me finishing Wildflower Long Course Triathlon in May 2009!)
I'm competing in an Ironman competition! That's right, Ironman! On August 29, 2010, I will be swimming 2.4 miles in Lake Okanagan, biking 112 miles and running 26.2 miles around Penticton, British Columbia to complete Ironman Canada! Or at least that's the plan anyway.
While I've signed up for a 10 month training program to prepare myself for race day, this has really been a journey that started 2 years ago when I jumped in a pool, and then bought a road bike, and then finished an Olympic distance triathlon, and then finished a 1/2 ironman distance triathlon, and then finished a metric century bike ride, and then a 1/2 marathon, and then a century bike ride, and then another 1/2 ironman distance triathlon, and another century, and another century, and a 2.4 mile open water swim without a wetsuit, and a marathon, and another century, you see where I'm going with this. :)
Team in Training is an endurance sports training program. In exchange for professional coaching to complete the event of my choice (running, biking, hiking, walking, triathlon), I have agreed to help raise money to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood diseases. Did you know that every five minutes, someone in the United States learns that he or she has leukemia, Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma and that every ten minutes, someone dies of a blood cancer? That's over 100,000 being diagnosed per year and over 50,000 dying per year! Researchers believe that leukemia is the most basic of all cancers and finding a cure for it could serve as a foundation for establishing a cure for all cancers. Coupled with strides that have been made in the last three years, your tax deductible donation will only bring us closer to a cure.
While I might complain (A LOT), wake up sore, complain that my clothes aren't fitting anymore, and completely disappear off the radar, this is my choice and I will love to hate every minute of it. Cancer patients don't have a choice. Here is a story of two women's journeys with cancer - one a survivor, the other her donor. http://www.self.com/health/2009/12/bone-marrow-donor. It's the stories like these that make the hours of training worthwhile - knowing that someone is benefiting from the money raised to fund research.
With your monetary support, countless numbers of people diagnosed with blood cancer will benefit from the research it funds. I thank you for your time and ask that you consider donating to a worthy cause. Every dollar counts! Go to http://pages.teamintraining.org/sj/ironca10/bwang and donate online, or you can mail me a check (email me for the address). Either way, you do a great honor to those who are fighting blood cancer. I am deeply grateful for your support.
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.
I hope you will visit my web site often.
Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your
support!

After reading my list of accomplishments over the last 2 years, let's make a game out of this... When you donate, try to guess how many yards I will swim, miles I will bike (indoor spin sessions will not count), and miles I will run before August 29, 2010. I'll have one prize for whoever has the closest guess and maybe prizes for each of the sports. I don't know what the prize will be yet, I just kinda made this up right now. :) Here's a clue as to what the year will be like if you want to make an educated guess:
Distances from week 2 of training:
Monday - swim 2000yds
Tuesday - indoor spin (won't count toward bike miles) + 2 mi run
Wednesday - swim 2250 yds
Thursday - should have been a run ~ 4 mi total
Friday - swim 1650 yds
Saturday - bike 14 miles
Sunday - swim 2800 yds + run 5 mi
That's 8700 yds swimming, 14 miles biking, 9 miles running in week 2 of training... So what's your guess?
