Sunday May 1st we participated in our first event of the year, The Avenue Of The Giants 1/2 Marathon, in the absolutely beautiful Humbolt Redwoods State Park in Northern California. As mentors, we were very proud of our teammates, Michelle, Sarah, and Tina. For Sarah and Michelle, this was thier first ever 1/2 marathon. Tina has done many events in the past. They all did splendidly. All three of them racing in memory of Tina's husband, Sarah's brother, and Michelle's Uncle Mario, who lost his battle with cancer almost a year ago. Mario was a great freind to Norma and I too! This race was very special for all of us as we were able to support each other in training and during the race and after and have many special memories of Mario along the way. Even sweeter was the fact that money was raised to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in their effort to find a cure for blood cancers and to provide support for patients and their families that are battling cancer.

Along the route on Sunday, there were some people parked along the route with very large posters that said, "I am alive because of what you are doing"!!. Talk about motivation to complete the races! WOW.

Each and every one of you who has donated money to support our efforts this year are part of that. Those posters are for you too!!

If you have not made a donation, please do so now. Every penney makes a huge difference in the life of someone. You have no idea who, and neither do I, but some day, maybe we will look back and say, wow, we helped find that cure for cancer through what we did! Please donate today!

Boy oh boy, last Saturday we trecked 14 miles for our training walk! It was a beautiful route, but alas, no photos. It was raining so hard that the only view was the water running down my glasses. Sheesh! Ok, I am not complaining. At least I didn't have to go get a chemotherapy injection, or spend the day getting a PET Scan, or worse yet, lying in a bed somewhere waiting for it to all be over. I am truly blessed that didn't have to go through any of that today.

But I have friends who go through that every week. It breaks my heart to see them suffer so. The least that I can do, is try to help raise money to fund research to find a cure. I need your help to accomplish this. Donate today. It only takes a minute. I am putting in the miles and some of my own money. Please won't you support this effort too! Every penny counts. The life you change, may not be yours, or someone that you know with a blood cancer today, but someday SOON, a cure will be found! Thank you for your support.

Blessings.

Last Saturday we trained in beautiful Aptos, CA at Nisene Marks Park. This is the place that was the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that caused so much damage to lives and property in the Bay Area. Our training walk was 12 miles and we were blessed with constant rain, hail, mud and darkness. During the training, I couldn't help but think about my friends Rich, Rick, Sally, Missy, and Melinda who are all battling Leukemia in one form or another. I also couldn't help but think about Lollie, Jim and Mario, who lost their battle with cancer recently. My 12 mile speed walk in the hail, rain and mud for 2.5 hours was nothing in comparison to what these heroes have gone through, or are going through in their war. They fight this battle 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. I don't know how they do it and keep their positive and hopeful attitude.

You can help increase their hope and the hope of others by contributing to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The money you donate helps in ways that you can't even imagine. A cure is right around the corner.

My efforts to help raise funds for this great cause are the least that I can do, since I don't have to brave chemotherapy, radiation, and the pain and sickness that goes along with all of them.

Thank you for your support

We are well into our training for the endurance events for this year, but we have a long way to go. We also have a long way to go to reach our fundraising goal. Won't you please help? Thank you to those of you that have already stepped up with your donations. Our heroes thank you. Who are they? They are our personal friends and family that are currently battling Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma and/or any of the other horrible blood cancers.

While I was out speed walking 10 miles last Saturday, and heading up the last hill in the last mile, I couldn't help thinking that as difficult as I thought it was, and no matter how much breath that I couldn't find, I was having an easy time compared to my friends that are going through chemotherapy each week. They endure much, much more than anything that I am putting myself through for this cause. They are the heroes, not me. I race because they can't. I am hopeful that with your help, that we can find a cure for these cancers that are infecting so many people through out the world. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the largest private fundraising organization in the world, dedicated to the mission of finding a cure. The research funding that has been provided over the years is having great results, not only with blood cancers, but ALL cancers. Some discoveries that have been made by the researchers funded by LLS were not pertinent to blood cancers, but have shown great effects against several other cancers. In fact, 19 of the 39 drugs currently approved by the FDA and used against ALL cancers, were discovered through the funding efforts of LLS.

So, thank you in advance for your support. Every dollar that you donate makes a HUGE difference in someone's life.

Greetings

As many of you know, I am currently training to race walk in my 4th and 5th ½ marathons, and 1st full marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Yes, I am doing all of these between May 1st and June 18th, 2011. Whew! I am doing these endurance events to raise funds to help this amazing organization find a cure for blood cancers, but I need your help to do it! So I am asking each of you to “Gimme 5”! Here’s how…

1. Gimme 5 minutes of your time Push the Donate Now Button

2. Gimme 5 bucks! Just donate online NOW – five dollars for a great cause! And hey, if you want to donate a multiple of five, fantastic! You know, 5, 25, 50, 100, 500, you get the idea.

3. Gimme 5 friends – copy and paste this note, and the link to this page into an email and send this to five friends to help spread the word!

4. Every 5 minutes someone new is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Money for research is desperately needed – so donate now!

5. $5 is the cost of sending information to a newly diagnosed patient about his or her disease.

6. 55,000 people will lose their battle with blood cancer this year alone. Some of them YOU will know personally, as will I.

Thank YOU five hundred times over for your past, present and future support! I greatly appreciate all of the notes and emails of encouragement!

Blessings,

Alan Huey
