It's a new century
Seven years, 30 marathons and one big triathlon after I started, I have rejoined the Leukemia & Lymphoma Societys Team in Training program. Although the cause is the same, Im again attempting a new sport. On March 14, 2009 I will cycle 104 miles in the Solvang Century to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
You have been amazingly supportive of my attempts to raise money to find a cure for those with Leukemia, Myeloma and other blood related cancers. In the past you helped me to successfully raise close to $20,000. My personal goal and commitment this season is to again raise a minimum of $3,000 to help fund research toward a cure for myeloma and related cancers in our lifetimes. At least 75% of all donations go directly toward blood cancer research; 100% of all funds I collect over my minimum will go to the cause.
There is still no cure for myeloma, nor are all the cures for the other blood cancers reliable. In 1999 my dad, Irv Goldman, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He courageously endured chemotherapy, radiation treatments and regular kidney dialysis to treat his disease and its effects. I will be riding this century in his honor and memory.
Your past support has been greatly appreciated and I'm thankful that you have been so giving. Thank you for believing in me and for your contribution to help find a cure for myeloma and the blood related cancers and to improve the lives of patients currently fighting their disease. If you have contributed in the past, already you have made a difference in someones life. Research changes the outlook for patients. From 1960 to today, the five-year survival rates for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (the most common form of childhood Leukemia) have improved from an appalling 4% to over 85%! Gleevec, a new drug, has been found effective in the treatment of Chronic Mylogenous Leukemia; it was developed by a scientist who is funded in large part by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Please support me in this effort by contributing generously to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. All donations are fully tax deductible. Whatever you give can, and will, make a difference! If you already donated in 2008, please consider donating again in January, 2009 for this fiscal year's contribution.
Thank you for anything you can do to help this truly worthy cause. Training for and completing a century ride is a challenge, but my challenge is nothing in comparison to that of my dad and others who battled these diseases and their effects on a daily basis. When I complete this century on March 14 you will be with me in spirit.
With heartfelt thanks,
Amy
Update 2/4/2009
I'm half-way to the distance and two-thirds of the way to my fundraising goal. We've been doing long rides along the hilly backroads of Marin County and the Livermore area. What a beautiful area we live in! Thank you for your donations and tell your friends to contribute - either through this page, through another TnT fundraiser, or directly to the LLS; the money all goes to the same place, and the money is still needed to help save lives.
