This week I am recommiting myself to Team in Training. What that means is that I am promising to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and I am promising to train my best to run a half marathon.
I have been touched and overwhelmed by the generosity of my friends and family! You are all rock stars! I've also been surprised to hear of all the lives that have been touched by leukemia or lymphoma. It makes me more passionate about supporting the LLS and raising funds to help fund research to find a cure and to provide for those suffering from a blood cancer.
My training has been sidelined lately due to illness. Fortunately the doc said it's not strep and I don't have an ear infection! Apparently there is a pretty nasty virus making the rounds and he said I'll probably be down for the count for another week. I'm so disappointed. But I've been told by some of my sporty friends that the body remembers and gets back up to speed pretty quickly. I sure hope that's the case!
Thanks again for all your support. Looking forward to being back in the saddle again soon!
Thanks to all of you who have so generously donated. I can't believe my total has jumped up to 54%. You all rock! This Saturday I face my longest run, 5-7 miles. I'm shooting for six! I've been sick all week so I have a feeling it's going to be a loooooong six.
My fundraising aim is to achieve 75% of my personal goal of $3000 by next Thursday, March 24th. To do that I just need a little help from you! If 25 people each donate $25 between now and next Thursday I'll be at my goal. So as you're kicking in the money for your March Madness brackets, make a little pit stop by my donation site and toss a few bucks in the kitty for a good cause! See the bottom of the page for your donation incentive!

Thank you so much for your support. My mother, her sisters and one brother lost their father to leukemia when they were young. I am dedicating my run to them as children who had their father taken far too soon. I run and raise money in the hopes that many other young children will be able to see their fathers beat leukemia and fathers will be able to see their children grow up.
What Is Leukemia?
Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, the spongy center of bones where our blood cells are formed. The disease develops when blood cells produced in the bone marrow grow out of control.
About 43,050 people are expected to develop leukemia in 2010.
The four most common types of leukemia are:
Each main type of leukemia is named according to the type of cell that's affected (a myeloid cell or a lymphoid cell) and whether the disease begins in mature or immature cells.
You'll also be entered in for a chance to win a hand knitted dishcloth from me! Prizes still available for the top donation amoutn and the wittiest/most endearing support comment by those who donate before noon on 3/24. Samples of past work include such beauties as these:
Thanks to all of you so far for your generous donations. To date I'm 30% of the way toward my personal goal. Yeehaw!
I've set a new deadline for myself - I want to be at 75% of my fund raising goal by Thursday, March 24th. And with your help, I know it can be done! Here is how the math breaks down:
If I can get 55 people to donate $25 to my fund right now, I'll be sitting pretty!
So to entice you to donate I've got a special deal - hand knitted goods! I'll be giving away three knitted dishcloths between now and St. Patty's day. You can win in one of three categories:
Just think, one of those winners could be you! I hope it will be!
Training has been going well. There have been some "challenges" (runner lingo for HILLS) and I've been learning a lot about shin splints (unfortunately the hard way) but I am so honored to be a part of this group. I had the privilege of meeting some of our team honorees last weekend at a brunch and they are amazing an inspirational. Some are in remission from Leukemia or Lymphoma and some are currently undergoing treatment. I think that the magnitude of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society really hit home for me when I learned that two of the honorees are taking a medication developed by the money raised by the LLS. Talk about a direct effect of effort and fund raising for the cause - it blows my mind!
So please take a moment to donate now so that we can continue to help the LLS develop new treatments and save lives!
And for your viewing pleasure, a couple of pictures from last weekend's run!
Love - Myla
Here you can see me on the left trudging up yet another hill!
And this is the glorious rest/refuel station. I was so glad to see it!
I couldn't ask for a better setting to wheeze and trudge my way through. This kind of view makes up for most/all the pain!
I looked and then I lept!
On Sunday, June 5th I will be running the San Diego Rock-n-Roll 1/2 Marathon! Yep, I'm going to run a (half) marathon! But I can't do it without your help!
I'll be running the 1/2 marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. In addition to my commitment to train and run, I have also committed to raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.
I am completing this event in honor of my maternal grandfather, Charles Marshall Smith. In 1969, at the age of 42, he passed away from Leukemia, leaving behind a wife and 8 children including my mother who was only 16. Because of this disease I never had the opportunity to meet my mother's father and 8 children lost their father. Thankfully much progress has been made in research and treatment but there is still much work to be done!
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. If I can get just 100 people to donate $30 right now, I'll have reached my personal goal of $3000! Help me make that happen as soon as possible!
Please visit my site often and check back frequently to see my progress. I'll send out email updates about my training and fundraising progress. Thanks for your support!
