Racing to Save Lives

wow! it's hard to believe that the training is coming to a close and race day is just around the corner. today my team mate Monica and I met up at Lake Anza and I finally swam a full mile....it took me just over an hour. the best part was i freestyled the entire way and felt great the whole time. as I exited the water I wasn't spinning and best of all I wasn't spent. Tonight we meet up again with the rest of the team for wed night track..intervals..uhg! it's all good though, it hurts but then it's over.

our team met at aquatic park on saturday for our first open water swim. it was also my first experience using a wetsuit. all week i had some anxiety about the swim. swimming in open water is different than in a pool and having never used a wetsuit i really didn't know what to expect so naturally i expected the worst. after our coach demoed donning the wetsuit it was out turn.
with a bit of effort i got the suit on and then it was time to get wet. there are some pretty funny pictures of me on the team page, capturing just how uncomfortable the first few minutes were.. scooping water into the neckhole and putting my face in the water was the worst part but really after a few minutes i acclimated fairly fast. the workout was approximately 1/3 mile and i was pleased to find out that the suit really does make you buoyant and i found my stroke rythm pretty quickly. as i approached the last buoy i got a little spooked by the slimy texture of the kelp attached to it.
the weather in sf on saturday was perfect. the water conditions couldn't of been better : flat and calm with not much visibility...which was fine by me, as i wasn't looking forward to getting up close and personal with any sea critters just yet...the few seals we did see kept their distance.
about half way through the swim i started to feel really great . i looked up to see one of the coaches nearby and i shouted out "this is f..... awesome!" the freedom of continuous swimming, the expansiveness, smell and taste of the ocean it was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life.
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
I'm training to participate in an endurance event as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.
I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
