I'm thrilled to be back for my third season with Team in Training. In addition to training to run the Nike Women's Marathon for the second time, I've taken on the responsibility of being Web captain for our team. I keep the information on our team website updated and take pictures at trainings, fundraisers and other events to post online. It feels great to be helping our participants reach their goals of fundraising for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and training for a marathon or half-marathon.
All of us on Team In Training are raising money to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. Our goal is to find a cure for these diseases and to improve quality of life for patients and their families. We don't have cures yet, so let me tell you something about what The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is doing to help with quality of life.
A Leukemia & Lymphoma Society grant funded research that led to the development of a drug called Rituxan. This drug is used to treat several blood cancers. Unlike chemotherapy, Rituxan targets cancer cells rather than destroying one's entire body. There are side effects, but they aren't like what you see with chemotherapy. One of our team honorees has a chronic cancer -- that means the cancer will keep coming back for the rest of his life or until a cure is found. Instead of being treated with chemo every time his tumors come back, he can be treated with Rituxan. Imagine the boost to his quality of life!
There are so many reasons I'm involved with Team in Training. Rituxan is just one of them. Lisa, Ricky, Todd, Justin, Matt, Tristan and Ricardo are others. Getting to see the people around me achieving things they never thought possible is another. Knowing that people are looking out for me and keeping me safe while training is another reason -- I found out just how important this is when I tripped and landed on my chin, requiring a trip to the hospital and stitches (see all the blood on my shirt in the picture?).
Please make a donation to support my continued participation in Team in Training and to help advance the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I hope you will visit my website often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
