Racing to Save Lives...and honoring too many.
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
First off, I want to say THANK YOU to all those who supported my first half-marathon last October. This year, I'm dedicating myself to the full marathon...YES, 26.2 miles through San Francisco! I am participating at the Nike Women's Marathon 2010 as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.
I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers, especially to honor the memory of my sister, Marisal who lost the fight three years ago.
Marisal was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia in May 1999. She underwent chemotherapy and despite the physical and emotional hardship she got through it and by the end of the summer had no signs of AML.
While in remission, Marisal travelled to Alaska, London, Paris and visited family in the Philippines. After two years, the AML returned. Fortunately, our other sister was a perfect bone marrow match. She handled the transplant very well but battled with graft-vs-host issues for the next few years.
In 2007 doctors discovered several infections in her body. An MRI revealed a tumor on the right side of her brain and a biopsy confirmed lymphoma. An infection post-biopsy caused partial paralysis of Marisal's left side, but despite all this, she continued to fight by undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Due to cardiac stress, she was admitted into the ICU. A blood based infection caused Marisal's heart to finally give out on July 31, 2007.
These are the real heroes on our team, the fighters, the survivors and the ones that lost the battle. We need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
