Hi, Everyone. Welcome to my Team in Training home page!

Two years ago, a good friend of mine, Josh Sack, passed away from leukemia. Josh lived life to the fullest. He dreamed of being a drummer, and, in his short 22 years he did just that, touring with his band around the country, playing for friends and fans who adored him.

Last year I ran the Nike Women's Marathon in his honor, raising over $3,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As I crossed the finish line, I thought my journey was over. However, events of the past year have made me realize that the fight against blood cancers is never over.

This spring, a close friend of mine lost his father to lymphoma. Everything David Zeehandelaar did, he did completely. As a lawyer representing plane manufacturers and airlines, he thought he should learn more about aviation and so earned his own commercial pilot license. An avid traveler, he was determined to visit all 50 states, which he did before his 50th birthday. When David made a martini, you knew it would be the best you’d ever had. Most of all, David was absolutely committed to the people in his life. He continued to take conference calls from his hospital room when his colleagues needed him. He encouraged his son to go on a trip to Australia just two weeks after his diagnosis. David believed in living life to its fullest.

And so, in honor of Josh and David, I've decided to do it again! I’ll be running the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco on October 17th. This year I’ll also be mentoring new Team in Training participants, who will be joining me in raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS), which helps support those battling leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma.

I know I’ve pushed the limits of your generosity already, but please consider giving again. As long as cancer continues to affect our lives, we must continue to fight back. I’ll be running 26.2 miles as part of my fight. I hope you’ll join.

I appreciate everyone's love and support so much. Thank you, all!

Updates:

July 7: I just return from Kenya and am TERRIBLY out of shape! It’s times like this that I find it hard to believe that I’ve signed up for this again. I had track practice last night and just a few 400s really took it out of me. I met some of the runners in my mentor group though, one of whom had a particularly inspiring story about her family members who are battling blood cancers. Remembering why we’re doing this is essential. Let’s just see how my 8-mile run on Saturday goes!

"Thank you for doing this (again), Lauren. Not only is a marathon hardly a piece of cake, but doing it for others is decidedly thoughtful and worthwhile."
