Update 10.5.10
I know, I know. I have been slacking on my updates. Although I haven't updated this page in over 2 months, it does not mean I have stopped my training. I have been training hard. I will like to reiterate how important it is to support those who have cancer whether it is Leukemia & Lypmphoma, prostate or breast cancer to name a few. Those who are plagued with cancer or have family members who has cancer greatly appreciate the support whether it is financial, spiritual or just an act showing you care.
Update 7.30.10
I know this is very late and it will be short. Training went good this past weekend. I walked 10 miles in 3hrs and 25min. Yea I know it is almost an hour more than the 9 mile walk. Let me explain. This 10 mile walk was filled with some crazy killer hills. We walked the Lafayette Reservoir. We walked around three times plus a straight route to warm up before we walked around the reservoir. The ice bath was my friend Saturday.
Update 7.19.10
Who is achy and sore all over? Well......ME OF COURSE!!!!
What is achy and sore all over? My legs and feet and who knows what else.
When did this happen? Saturday, July 16
Where did this happen? Heather Farm Park on the Iron Horse Trail
Why was I on that trail and why am I so sore? I WALKED 9.26MI IN 2HRS AND 36MINS to train for the Nike Women's Marathon and support LLS.
It felt really good to complete that walk. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make 9miles especially since I was not there for the 8mile walk but I made it and felt good right afterwards. The good feeling quickly faded when the soreness set in.lol Oh well, no pain no gain.
Update 7.12.10
Major update. It has been a while since my last update as you can see. So lets get it started. July 3 was our 2hr walk and we had a potluck at Amma's (aka Ms. Price- :-) ). I was late for the walk but I still did my 2hours. I walked 7.05miles in 1hr and 59minutes.lol I am so proud I did that many miles in less than two hrs. I don't care that I was a minute away from two hrs. Afterwards we had a great time at Amma's and Vernon's home.
The following day I entered the 4th of July R.A.C.E in Alameda. It was fun but very intimidating. There was about 15 to 20 people who walked and the rest ran. It was kind of crazy trying to stay in form and to walk while you are walking the parade route and everyone is watching you. I was a little perturbed when a little boy said, "Mommy they are the last ones in they race." I wanted to scream "no we are not". Me and my mother was leading the walkers. I laughed about it and moved on. We received a lot of encouragement along the way and was able to finish in 50minutes. It might have been 49minutes but I forgot to turn off my timer so I will just say 50.
We missed training for the week following the 4th but we didn't stop training. We did a lot of walking all around Disneyland, Universal and the shopping mall. It was fun easy walk. The fun lessened on the 11th. I signed us up for another 5K.lol If you know me you know I love baseball. The All-Star Game is in Anaheim this year and of course I tried to get tickets but couldn't. I seen they were doing a 5K and thought I can be apart of this event some kind of way so I walked the 5K on Sunday. It was fun but very crowded. The start gun went off and I didn't start moving until 8minutes later. Crazy!!!
I finished that race in one hour. No I did not forget my form, injure myself or give up. It was so crowded by the time we got towards the end of the race and had to walk inside the stadium on the field (of course I was lovinig it. Check out the pics above :-)) we were at a standstill at points. If I could have kept a steady pace I believe I could have finished within 46 or 47 minutes. It was great finishing and having a photo taken and a medal handed to me. I wore the medal all the way home.lol
One thing I learned from both 5Ks. I must kept form and remember I am a walker not a runner.lol When you are doing a race and you have so many people running passed you, you have the urge to want to run. If you have that urge I suggest you put it in check. I didn't run but I tried to walk faster and I felt it in my shins.
I am ready to start training with the group again. I will be there this evening at the Lake and look forward to the torture session on Wednesday. Just kidding, it is not a torture session but I know I will be in pain.
Update 6.27.10
Sore but still going strong. On Wednesday the 23rd we had core training. It was great but man was I wiped out. I was feeling it all Thursday and Friday but it was great because I know the core training will further assist me in finishing the race.
I wasn't sure how I was going to feel on Saturday for our walk but I was feeling fine. We walked the Berkeley Marina. It was very nice and beautiful views. Never even thought about walking the Berkeley Marina until Saturday. There is always something new in your backyard you just have to be willing to explore. We walked 1 and a 1/2 hrs. 45 minutes out and 45 minutes in. I am so proud that it only took 42 minutes to walk to walk back. I want to believe that I had just increased my speed in walking but I think one of those minutes I shed happened because I was running from the little rodents on the paths.lol Whether the rodents helped or not I did walk 5miles in 1hr and 28mins. Not bad for a newbie. I am looking forward to the buddy walk today and dreading the core training on Wednesday but I will be there.
Update 6.23.10
Heres my update:-) Ok I am still training everyone. I did not give up although I thought a 5 mile walk was impossible. I was dreading the walk and couldn't believe I was on a trail in the cuts in Livermore. That was this past Saturday. It is funny how quick we tell ourselves "I can't do. It's impossible" but it is great when you ignore that little voice and just do it. You can look back with a huge smile on your face and know you didn't give up.
I have ignored that little voice a few times within this past week. I ignored it on Saturday on the 5 mile walk and I ignored it when I was in Portland. I was not planning to train at all while I was in Portland but I put myself in a situation that required me to go into training mode. I decided to walk three miles away from the hospital where my great-grandfather was having surgery, of course bringing my mother with me. I thought we had three hours but that was not the case. We received a call after we made it to Downtown Portland and then had to hike it back up to the hospital because my great-grandfather was ready to go.
The voice in my head was telling me I couldn't do it and I was looking at the different landmarks near the hospital and kept saying I couldn't make it. I was actually looking for a bus stop and trying to search on my phone for the schedule.lol I didn't fall to that temptation. We made it back to the hospital (3 miles all uphill) in 35 minutes. We were exhausted but we made. It felt good.
The experience in Portland and the five miles on Saturday were inspiring. I even decided to do the 5k for the MLB All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run while I am enjoying a short vacation in Southern Cal.
Update 6.14.10
I am about two weeks into my training. At times I get tired and just want to sit down and watch tv or read a book but I think of those who have cancer or any other disease that prevents them from enjoying a day out in the sun or strolling in the park. When I think of them I tell myself to stop being so lazy. By me just walking and raising money I am supporting all individuals who are battling blood cancer. Every cent counts especially when it is saving a life.
My training started out nice and smooth. We walked a trail in Heather Farm Park. I thought "oh this is smooth sailing, we are going to always walk at this pace, nice." I continued with my training on my own for the following weekend because I was out of town. I walked two days straight, one day at Disneyland and the second day at the San Diego Zoo. I was pulling hills thinking how crazy was I trying to walk in this heat. I was losing my motivation until I was walking through the San Diego Zoo and I seen a group of individuals with Team In Training hats and shirts. I had to go for it and yell, "Go Team." I seen the group look around trying to find who said it and when they seen me they jumped and screamed "Go Team" and they were clapping and laughing. That moment was very inspiring. When you see such excitment with just two words and you know the meaning behind them, you know you are involved in a great cause and your support will save lives.
I returned from my trip and went right into the Mentor-led walk around Lake Merritt. That was my first time walking the entire lake. I didn't think I would ever walk the Lake but it was fun seeing the progess you made as you looked across the lake and you could say to yourself, "hey I was just over there a few minutes ago and now I am all the way over here." Seeing the progress is additional motivation especially when you know a month ago you would have laughed if someone said you was going to walk the entire lake. As you continue to make progress you know that progress will make a difference on many different levels.
As training continues I continue to strive forward because I know this is not only helping my health but it is helping others. I will continue to push myself and always remember to thank God that He has given me the ability to walk and make a difference.
Your support will help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. Any donation is welcome.
I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
