A Thank You Letter to TNT Leadership and Team Members
Mar 05, 2011 by Kimberlli Walker

A COURSE IN [TNT] LEADERSHIP: The ten qualities of leadership one can find the TNT SF Bay Area Winter triathlon coaches, assistant coaches, mentors, captains, honorees and participants.

HONESTY:
- You are on one accord with both your words and actions you openly stand behind the decision made for the team.
- You give meticulous and useful feedback helping us improve as athletes, aspiring athletes and volunteers for the cause.
TRUST:
- You trust in the process and
- You trust in each other and encourage trust from everyone in the team
TOLERANCE:
- You don’t judge.
- You allow space for the break downs which in turn leads to the big break through.
- You remind us to not judge ourselves. You encourage us “to be afraid and do it anyway”, to just get out and swim one more lap “you’ll feel better about yourself if you do”.
GENTLENESS:
- You approach the weak moments with compassion and respect. Proverbially holding the hand of the panic stricken and explaining the advantage and buoyancy of a wet suit.
- You evoke courage with a glance and a smirk and pull us out of our comfort zone with positive feedback.
PATIENCE, FAITH AND JOYFULNESS:
- Your courage and jovial approach to each of the trainings exemplifies faith, and the importance of living in the moment and enjoying the journey.
DEFENSELESSNESS:
- You roll with the punches. When locked out of the pools and track, you dig deep, look past the obstacles and encourage us to do the same. Now running 4 miles in a parking lot is no longer stupid but a reflection of our dedication.
GENEROUSITY:
- You coach well into your third trimester, give birth and keep it moving…need I say more.
- You share your personal journey with cancer.
- You share stories about honorees that are obviously more than just names and anecdotes but friends, and team mates.
- You keep us focused on what’s relevant as you pour out your heart and relive the discomfort experienced when seeing loved ones fight for their lives.
- You donate your bone marrow, come back to continue your training, supporting and motivating the team.
- On sunny days instead of getting to do your own training you happily host the water stop and SAG because “someone did it for you once”
- You offer up your own bike and spend the afternoon figuring out how to switch out your peddles from clips to standard, so that a team member can ride with the group.
- You slow down in the middle of your ride to teach your teammate how to work their gears and safely descend steep hills.
- You car pool and make breakfast for your mentees. You spend time helping them on ideas for fundraising.
- You organize exciting OYO bike workouts, and bricks.
- You pull together detailed OYO core exercises instructions.
- You attend and support the fundraisers of your team mates.
OPEN MINDNESS:
- In dangerous conditions you step back to look at the big picture.
- You put your egos aside and listen with your inner ear, see with your inner eye to discern what is safest for the team at large.
LOVE:
- Your dedication to TNT and your commitment LLS is infectious. GO TNT LEADERSHIP

This one is for the children
Jan 25, 2011 by Kimberlli Walker

Today is the beginning of week 12 of my triathlon training.
I have been so focused on surviving my training that for a second I lost sight of why I am participating in this event. When I started TNT training it was to honor my father. While that remains true, I have become increasingly aware at just how powerful and relentless this disease is.
I am learning so much by meeting and hearing from some of the cancer patients and survivors (Honorees) or their friends and family. We all know the strength of the human spirit because we know what we have survived in our own lives. I am discovering the remedy of hope, optimism and ingenuity by hearing stories from the survivors of disease. They speak about the power of positive thinking coupled with the breakthrough medicine developed by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and their personal determination to not let cancer take their lives.
This is why most of my free time; all of my energy, mental and spiritual resources has gone into this process. Yes I am growing as a person and having a blast, even though I spend much of the time petrified of failure. In those moments I simply remember the heart breaking statistic and stories:
- Approximately 4 minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer.
- Every 10 minutes, someone in the US dies from a blood cancer. This statistic represents nearly 148 people each day or more than six people every hour.
- Neoplasm of the brain and other nervous tissue, Hodgkin lymphoma, and NHL are the most common types of cancer in children aged 0 to 19 years.
I pull courage from the blog written by a mother and wife that has been living with brain cancer for several years. I think of my nieces and nephews, young and infant cousins, and the children of friends from Boston to ATL, West coast, and in Europe. I celebrate these children, as we all do; assuming that they have their whole lives ahead of them. I stay confident that their vibrant smiles and gregarious disposition will be untouched by anything harmful. But to be sure that I am doing my part, I swim, bike, run and raise money knowing that our efforts to help LLS find a cure could one day save the lives and/or quality of life of these children, their parents and their aunties, uncles, grand parents, friends and neighbors.
