Racing to Save Lives

Hello, and welcome to my Team in Training fundraising page for 2009-10. I will be participating in the Lavaman Triathlon in Hawai'i on March 28, 2010. I am very excited and proud to be a part of this effort. But I really need your donation help for this event; the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society helps so many people, and every dollar counts.

This is my second TNT event, as I previously did the Grand Canyon hike event in 2006. It was an amazing experience in many ways, and I am happy to be renewing my commitment to L&LS with this event.

UPDATE:

Training is about half over at this point; this picture is from our mini-tri on January 24, 2010, where we had to run the last four miles in the rain. Fun times …

My right calf locked up a bit on the bike ride, so I need to work on being more hydrated there. And then at the end of the run, both my quads were starting to lock up. Same thing there in terms of on-hand hydration.

But it was good fun nonetheless.

I need to really step up my training now that I have two months to go for the Lavaman, but this was a good experience to know I can do at least half the lengths that matter in late March.

I need some work on my bike, for sure, but otherwise, my strategy was good. Mentally, I view the first part of the bike ride as my toughest points, because "the end" seems so far away. Once I hit the halfway mark on the mini-tri bike ride, I was re-energized and focused.

I tend to view the run as a "warm down", anyway, since I'm not "in it to win it". It's an extended victory lap, if you will, for me. I do need more pure running mileage in my training, so I'll work on that. I have a two-mile routine I want to implement this week (1/4-mile fast, 1/4-mile normal, repeat, etc.).

Feel good, though. Stretching and hydrating immediately afterward was really beneficial (duh).

So, I really need your donation help for this event while I continue to train; the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society helps so many people, and every dollar counts.

Thanks for your support!

"Sam: Zack is a neighbor's grandson (now about 10 y/o), who underwent long-term treatment at UCSF several years ago with amazing results. Unfortunately, he now needs organ removal (spleen, I think). Keep plugging - good luck!"
