Last weekend we increased the length of our rides to 32 miles. The ride was called "Three Bears" and started in Orinda, taking us over some quite steep hills (Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear). We have been separated into groups based on our skill level and speed. Ryan of course is in a faster group, but that's ok, because my teammates and I all support each other and we have a great coach who is helping us build up our endurance.
This weekend the ride was also 32 miles. It started in Kentfield (slightly north of our house) and went south through Sausalito, towards the Golden Gate Bridge and then west to the Marin Headlands. It sounded like a fun ride with some very challenging hill climbing. Ryan made it through riding his new bike for the first time.
I have a new bike too (thanks to my wonderful and generous co-worker Kerri for lending me her bike while I looked for my own), but unfortunately I didn't get to try it out this weekend. I was on a ride on Thursday when a car drifted into the bike lane. My choice was to collide with the car or try to get out of the way, and I ended up landing on the sidewalk when my pedal clipped the curb. I used my hand to break my fall and now I have a nice bruise on my palm and thumb. I'm starting to feel much better already though, and I'm hopeful that (maybe) by next weekend I can join in our 45-mile ride through San Rafael.
Update, 2/3/2013:
I am honored and excited that we are already receiving donations, but we have a long way to go! Coming soon, we will have more information about a raffle we will be trying to hold.
This was our first official training weekend. On Saturday we met as a group and were given valuable information about gear, safety, nutrition, bicycle repair and our bikes were "fitted" (adjusted so we are riding in proper form). Then we went on a 13-mile ride through some gently rolling hills in Pinole. I was very slow (the last one to come in) but I made it! The whole team is nice and supportive. The coaches and mentors make certain you aren't left behind, and two of them rode with me on the way back.
There are some very inspiring people on our team. One woman has participated in over 40 charity cycling events. We have several "honoree" members, meaning that they are survivors of blood cancer who are participating in the event. If they can do it, then I have no excuse!
Today Ryan and I rode together around what is known as the Paradise Loop. We took Paradise Drive up around Ring Mountain, through Paradise City and into Tiburon. Then we rode west over the freeway to Mill Valley and on a bike trail that brought us into Corte Madera, then back home again. This ride was 18 miles.
Next week , we have another group ride on Saturday. This route is through Napa and is 25 miles! It will be my longest ride by far. That's one of the great things about TNT--you are taught how to do things you never thought you could do before, and are supported the whole way.
Teams are made up of individuals. Without them, there is no team.
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
I have a mission-to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers. To accomplish that mission, I’m participating in a sports endurance event as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training. Like the other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I’m improving the quality of my life by participating and with your support, I can help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well.
Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.
