Racing to Save Lives Welcome to my IronTeam Training home page. Wow! Less than 3 months remain from my 9 months of training to become an Ironman! Consider joining me in a race that will benefit many people who are in the race of their lives. Currently, I am training with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training to complete one of the most physically strenuous and oldest Iron Distance event in the Continental United States, the Vineman Full Triathlon, in which I'll swim 2.4 mile in the Russian River, bike 112-miles and run 26.2 through beautiful Sonoma County's wine country all within the same day within a 16-hour time limit on August 1, 2009 Six words sum up why I do endurance events: Because I'm Alive. Because I Can. For this Ironman event, Louie Bonpua is my inspiration. As I prepare for this event, I am not only raising my physical endurance, I am raising critical funding for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a highly respected national health agency dedicated to finding a cure fore leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease and myeloma and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $600 million in leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma research. Society funded research has led to key advances in understaning blood cancers and has produced new treatments to enhance and prolong lives. In 1988 , only 3% of children diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood leukemia, were expected to survive. Today, 87% of children treated for ALL are expected to live normal, healthy lives. Despite the advances in treatments, leukemia remains the #1 disease killer of people under the age of 20. Additionally, leukemia strikes nine times as many adults as children. This year the Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter alone will fund $5,575,000 in grants to 19 scientists at UC San Francisco, UC Berkeley and Stanford. Be a Training Partner by supporting the cause I'm training for. In the past three years, I've completed four marathons and a 104-mile bike ride, but this will be my first triathlon and I can't believe that I've chosen an Ironman distance for my first attempt! I've committed to raise $6000 by 7/1/09. Each gift is an inspiration for me to push a little harder as I swim, bike and run for you and the many people who battle blood cancer. In these tough economic times, charity is even more important. Help those in the race of their lives by making your year-end donation today. No amount is too small or too large. Your gift is 100% tax deductible and is an investment that makes a difference in the lives of thousands of patients.
Every contribution will have an impact and will be appreciated by so very many. If your company matches your donation via Matching Gift, please select "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter" and send me the completed Matching Gift form. If you do not want to give online, please send check made payable to "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society" and mail to me (Jennifer Jay, 366 Blue Oak Lane, Clayton, CA 94517). I am completing this event in memory of Brenda, Corinne, Eric, Cole Maxx, Victoria, Caroline, Ray, Maddie, Richard, Louie, Shelby, James Henry, Lynn and in honor of those who are battling or have battled leukemia & lymphoma: Kendra, Joseph, Porter, Paul, Vanessa, Thomas, Chip, Frank, Michael, Cheryl, Sandi, Ellie & Ruth. If there is someone you would like me to race in honor or memory of, let me know. Thank you for your continued support and words of encouragement, which means so much to me.
